Italy, France Send Assistance To Somali Region

On Friday, 5 December, Italy's supply of medicines, 120 rolls of plastic, 60 tents, 12 accident kits and 3 motor boats reached Gode town in the Somali Region of Ethiopia. The French operation of assistance to populations affected by the floods in the Eastern part of Ethiopia has ended on 6 December.

According to Disaster Prevention Preparedness Commission, the various relief items supplied by the Italian government were to help the rehabilitation of flood victims in Gode town.

Meanwhile, a press release from the French Embassy here in Addis Ababa said that the country's assistance to flood victims in eastern part of Ethiopia, which started on 23 November has ended last Saturday.

Some 38.7 metric tonnes of sorghum, 20 tonnes of biscuits, 3.3 tonnes of sugar and 710 kg of medicine have been transported to Gode; and from the capital city of the Somali Regional State to eight emergency centres and to 50 villages located in Imi, Hargele and Ferfer.

The cost of the operation, considered to be extremely successful, amounted to 735,000 US dollars. The operation was carried out with a heavy transport aircraft C 160 Transall, two Puma helicopters and a team of 60 individuals.
