Challenge yourself and challenge cancer..
Cancer affects us all. If we avoid it someone we know will be less fortunate, as one in every three people will have some form of cancer in their lifetime. At the Yorkshire Cancer Centre we deliver unparalleled levels of treatment and care to cancer patients across the Yorkshire region. Our new Institute of Oncology at St. James’s Hospital in Leeds is already the largest cancer centre in Europe and now we want it to be the best. We have launched a £10m Appeal to further enhance the facilities and care our patients receive, and to ensure that we remain at the leading edge in cancer diagnosis, treatment and care.
The Yorkshire Cancer Centre is appealing for supporters to set themselves a challenge this year and join its Cuban cycling adventure in November 2009 to raise funds to help more people survive cancer.
This incredibly beautiful ride will take cyclists along quiet roads and through villages which seem suspended in time whilst raising funds to help ensure that Yorkshire cancer patients receive world-class cancer care. Taking part in this challenge will give you memories to last forever. You will make new friends and be part of a group who support each other to complete the challenge. If you want to do it, with our help you can!
Cycle Cuba is being organised by Julie Patmore who is working on behalf of Yorkshire Cancer Centre as a professional fundraiser. She took part in a similar challenge two years ago having been touched by adversity, and is keen to encourage others to do the same.
She said, “This is a challenge for people of average fitness, not just the super fit. You do need to be prepared to put in some time fundraising and fitness training, but in my experience the sense of achievement on the challenge makes it all worthwhile”.
It is a 9 day trip with 5 days cycling and is open to people of all ages (over 18). Julie added, “What’s unique about this kind of adventure is the camaraderie amongst the group, as it brings together people of all ages, from all walks of life but united by a common goal.’’
The event is part of Yorkshire Cancer Centre’s £10M Appeal to advance medical research, buy the latest generation of equipment, and provide more ’home from home’ comforts for patients, their family and friends.
Participants will need to make a personal contribution of £300 to secure their place, and raise a minimum amount of sponsorship. At least 50% of the funds raised will go to the work of the Yorkshire Cancer Centre. The charity provides a support pack to help with both fundraising and fitness training.
