Inner Game of Soccer, by Eric Sellin. The author
discusses the laws of the game in detail and the proper application of the laws
to manage the game successfully. The
reader should be aware that the book was written in the mid 1970’s and
therefore some of the details of the laws have changed. The
Soccer Referee’s Manual, by David Ager. Each law is
discussed in turn in this book which is at a level quite suitable for beginning
referees but is a good review for more experienced officials. Questions and answers throughout the book
add to its usefulness. For
The Good of The Game, by Robert Evans and Edward Bellion, 2000. Both authors write from a deep well of experience as FIFA
referees, and the book contains interesting anecdotes of the authors’ personal
dealings with well known world class players.
More important, though, are the themes and valuable comments that
permeate throughout. This is a must
read, particularly for more experienced referees. The
Man in The Middle, by David Elleray, 2004. This
is an autobiography of an English official who was considered one of the top 4
officials in the world and worked in England and Europe extensively at the
highest professional levels of soccer.
It tells a story in an interesting and clear manner about the
dedication, commitment, and sacrifices that are necessary to reach the pinnacle

"The Beautiful Century" contains a great deal of historical information on the development of soccer around the world and provides some old video footage going back to the late 19th century. Painting

advanced referee. Shows differences
between shielding, impeding, charging, and between caution and send off fouls. Referee
Refresher Course (2003-04), by John Nielsen. Shows 24 foul/no foul
situations with answers. Also shows a number of throw-in and hand ball
examples with answers. Euro 2004, by John Nielsen. Consists of 4 foul recognition sections: foul vs no foul; careless vs reckless; foul vs. unsporting behaviour; and sending off offences. In addition there is a full session on dangerous play and 19 offside examples. 10 Clips Video Exam, by John Nielsen. Ten situation scenarios from various games. Viewers have 30 seconds between clips to assess technical and practical aspects. Best for group discussion purposes with a knowledgeable facilitator. Assess the Referee, by John Nielsen. Designed for assessors, it consists of 1 full soccer game from Euro 2004, Czechoslovakia vs. Netherlands. The DVD makes access through the menu of; all fouls only, all corner kicks, all ceremonial free kicks, all offsides, all problems with one player, all cautions, scenarios only. Soccer Referee Video Test - Toronto 2005, by John Nielsen. Ten situation scenarios from various games. Also includes an interesting observation test. 2006 Nominated Nationals Video Exam, by John Nielsen. Seventeen situation scenarios from various games. Best for group discussion purposes with a knowledgeable facilitator. Fine Tuning the Thinking Referee, Vol 1, by John Nielsen. Contains good information on the following topics; mastering the offside law, dealing with goalkeeper issues, recognizing caution and sendoff infringements, understanding the advantage clause, assessing the obvious goal scoring opportunity. Angle of View, by Robert Evans. Graphically shows the referee, using game videos, the best angle of view from which to see fouls and misconduct. Instruction for Referees, by Robert Evans and Albert Kleinaitis. Advice and examples concerning fouls and misconduct, offside, and the making of good decisions.
