Dj Mocha Fudge aKa Moky

Age:16

How long I've Been Making Music:
1 and a half years.

Some History:
I started as a music producer with some sampling and software programs. Mostly creating D&B Tracks that sounded pretty crappy until one fine day my song reached #16 in it's genre solely from downloads. Then I began playing with some other programs and contructed some Techno, and Battle beats on the side. Then one fine day, POW! I heard this song by the Skratch Piklz...and i was hooked, I bought my first set of tables, Gemini Xl-100s...YEE HA.... I began practicing my scratches.... Chirps, Transformers, and then tried making uo some of my own. I haven't had my big break yet...I've done some house parties and a dance but that's small potatoes of what i'm capable of.

Dj IV

Brian Pelrine is a 19 yr old Halifax native who has been spinning records since June of 1999.

He got his start at the old Crash Cafe, now Splatshot, where they had decks set up for anybody to play with. He started out spinning house and in September 1999 Bert Knockwood, aka Shinook, gave him an old set of tables. Brian ran out and bought a mixer the next day and started on his way to becoming DJ IV (pronounced Ivy).

To Brian's dismay the pitch faders on his "new" turntables didn't work thus rendering his collection of house music useless. He decided to give scratching a try, hell Shinook was good at it why couldn't he be too? So with a handfull of old Hip Hop records and an Oscar the Grouch 45 he started to teach himself how to scratch. Eventually he was taught how to do different types of scratches and he worked on his skills, preparing himself for when he would eventually perform live.

He played house parties and school coffee houses until June 2000 when he entered the Turntablism category in the DJ Olympics and made 4th place, so he was told. No small feat for somebody who had only been serious about DJing for 9 months.

When asked, Brian says that his best moment as a DJ was when he played at the Olympics. "That was the best moment for me as a deejay i finally got to show people that i was here and capable of cutting it just like everybody else."

His worst moment as a DJ came in November 1999 when his girlfriend died of a rare virus. "I kinda hit rock bottom with my turntablism and wasn't learning anything at all, not even putting effort into it. Then things kinda turned around, but that rut was the worst moment as a DJ for me." None the less, he managed to come back from that low point and perform a great set at the DJ Olympics Qualifying round.

Right now Brian is just starting his career. His plans for the future include an upcoming demo tape and eventually producing some of his own battle records. DJ IV is one to look for in the future of the Halifax Hip Hop/Turntablism scene.
