REPORT:-
Back
to league business today and a home match against F.C.Donview. Our numbers were
a little better with a squad of 15 players. Changes were enforced with Keith
tied up at work and Graham reporting an injury. Andrews returned but Michie
retained his place in goal behind a back four minus Marlow who left himself out
instead naming Sim, Fulton, Robertson and Stubbs. In midfield the Milne brothers
were joined by Morgan and M.Woods and G.Woods partnered Anderson, who was
playing in his one hundredth match for the club, in attack. Our bench was
spilling over with players namely England, Mitchell, Marlow and Andrews. Halli
started quickly and took the game to the opponents. The first real chance fell
to and was missed by G.Woods. Soon after, Anderson, desperate to shine in his
100th game, sent an excellent through ball into the path of M.Woods
unfortunately his path was blocked by a good challenge from the Donview sweeper.
Morgan smashed into a challenge and took two Donview players out at once. The
ball broke for G.Woods who should have put us in front but shot weakly at the
keeper. That was to prove costly as the game was then to turn completely on its
head. Donview went onto snatch 3 goals before the interval as we fell to bits.
All 3 goals were preventable, some aided by poor refereeing, some by poor
defending or goalkeeping indeed one was aided by a combination of all 3. The
first goal followed two poor refereeing decisions, at least two poor defending
attempts then a poor attempted clearance by the keeper who in real life plays at
centre half! To cap all that when the ball finally was adjudged to have crossed
the line it looked like a scene from ‘It’ll be alright on the night’!! The
2cnd was another we should have prevented and the 3rd despite being
offside, should have been cleared well before it got to the scorer. (H.T.0-3) A
tough task to turn a 0-3 deficit round but in all honesty Donview were no great
shakes and must have been delighted to go in 3 up. We had been passing the ball
like blind men and even taking throw ins straight to the opposition. We got a
great opportunity early doors when M.Woods was sent clear however blasted high
and wide. In 50 mins Stubbs was woefully short with a pass inside and Fulton
could not collect. Morgan steamed in but only succeeded in knocking it to a
midfielder who hit an opportunist effort from distance. Michie was left
embarrassed when he dived under the ball, a save he should have made with ease
despite a bawble in front of him. The difficult task had now been made almost
impossible but on the hour mark we were handed a life line when the referee
continued his run of iffy decisions and awarded us a very very soft penalty.
G.Woods thumped it home to score his 100th club goal, his 5th
of the season. We did in fairness take a lift from this and enjoyed the lions
share of possession for the remainder of the match. In 65 old king goal came up
with a cracker. Robertson picked up the ball some 20 yards from Donviews net and
drilled a low shot towards the bottom corner. The visiting keeper was rooted to
the spot as the ball flashed past him. It was vital that we get another as soon
as possible to allow us time to press for the leveller. However despite constant
pressure we could not find the net again. E.Milne came close when he struck the
bar but despite a much improved second half performance all we picked up for our
afternoons work was 3 yellow cards and a very bad result against a very average
side. (F.T.2-4). Too many of our lads simply did not perform anywhere near as
well as they can and all round our passing was embarrassing. Credit where it is
due for a better second half display but we were always chasing the game after
such a disastrous half time result. Hallitopman is picked up by Tony Morgan, his
display typified what is required from everyone. He has had better matches in
terms of passes and shooting but never once did he hide in the match. We must
improve in next game.
