REPORT:-

Halliburton's finest gathered at Hazlehead this afternoon hoping to kick start a season that has to date, proved to be disappointing . In our first match of the new year we were scheduled to face Auchnaggatt Barons in a league match. This would give us the ideal opportunity to get back into things and to get some much needed points on the board. We currently sit rock bottom of the division and although we have games in hand over most of the sides, points can not be gained by talking, we had to start today to climb up the long ladder and into a respectable league position . This could only happen if we focused fully on the job in hand. We had to perform for 90 minutes, unlike in our last match when an excellent first half display had been wiped out by an appalling second 45. With a number of players unavailable for various and in some cases unknown reasons, we lined up with Michie in goal, Sim, Shaw Remember him?) Robertson and Wood in defence. Keith, Longmuir, E.Milne and Morgan formed the midfield and Graham joined G.Woods in attack. We had only two subs namely Merchant and Marlow. We started brightly and took the game to the visitors. Within 15 mins we were handed the ideal opportunity to go in front when G.Woods was felled in the box. Unfortunately comeback man Shaw fired a weak effort straight at the keeper and Grahams follow up shot was also saved. Soon after E.Milne hit the bar with a speculative overhead kick then Robertson grabbed our first goal of the year when he bundled in at the near post off a fumble from the keeper. We continued to dominate but could not increase our lead.(H.T.1-0) A good move linking Robertson, E.Milne and Morgan set up Graham to fire low into the net in 60mins. Coasting or so it seemed until we surrendered a really soft goal. Michie should have been a lot more dominating when coming for a ball but a visiting forward nipped it past him. Barons sensed a comeback and should have been level when their number 8 fired over an empty goal from 3 yards! This jolted us and a through ball from Graham found E.Milne, his early strike enough to beat the keeper. In 75mins Longmuir made a superb run up the right to set up our 4th and Graham was well placed to turn it in past the keeper. Robertson was adjudged to have fouled 30 yards from goal and a corner was gained off the free kick, from this corner Barons grabbed a 2cnd when a tame header at the near post was nodded in. This again was poor defending on our part. Merchant and Marlow replaced the two forwards and as time ran out Barons had a goal chalked off for offside. The visitors finished the game on top in search of another goal but no more goals were scored and we started the year in the perfect way picking up a well deserved three points. (F.T. 4-2) If we had taken all the chances created this afternoon we could have had this match in the bag much earlier on, as it was, to a certain extent ,we were hanging on a bit towards the end. That said we played some good stuff today and created a number of real opportunities. It must also be said that the goals we conceded were very poor. There were a number of good displays this afternoon. Morgan had a great first half, E.Milne was much more like himself, Graham had his best game for us yet and Keith was his usual self linking well with this afternoons Hallitopman Gary Longmuir who typified his performance whilst setting up our fourth goal, brilliant.
