REPORT:-
Could
Halliburton put together back to back victories and force themselves up the
league? That was the question being asked all around Scotland as pundits fans
and players alike gathered at their respective Saturday afternoon venues. A
healthy 17 strong squad were gathered at a busy Hazlehead pavilion to take on
Stonehaven Athletic in what would be a difficult match. One change was made from
last weeks starting line up when Fulton was preferred to Sim in the right full
back position, The rest was unchanged with Michie in goal, Shaw, Robertson and
Wood joining Fulton at the back. Keith, E.Milne, Longmuir and Morgan were in
midfield behind the front pairing of G.Woods and Graham. The bench was filled by
Merchant, N.Milne, Sim, Marlow and M.Woods. We had a strong gale behind us and a
bright sun also made life difficult for Stonehaven. We got off to a great start
when in only 5mins. E.Milne was well placed to tap in after a glanced header
from Graham. This set the tone and Halli went on to dominate this half. Some of
our play was excellent as we continually went at the visiting defence. Morgan
was outstanding and the David Snedden look alike thundered into every challenge.
On one occasion the wee midfielder even found time to practice his performing
arts routine when he skipped and danced his way out of a tight corner before
slipping the ball to Robertson who had been so mesmerised by the singer he could
only blast the ball out of play! We went 2 up in 15 mins. Graham was felled in
the box and G.Woods stepped forward to blast home the penalty. We were all over
Stonehaven and Michie was a virtual spectator. A third was scored when G.Woods
grabbed his brace in 35mins.The big striker went on a powerful run before
thundering a shot low past the keeper. Right on half time we hit our 4th.
Tony Snedden Morgan hit a great volley which the keeper parried. E.Milne got
onto the spillage and converted from a tight angle. (H.T. 4-0) A superb
performance had put us in a commanding position for the second half however we
had to guard against complacency. It was important that we continued the good
work started in the first half. The visitors now had the wind in their favour
and of course this did see them take a bit more control of things. We defended
reasonably well only a couple of times did we look uncertain. On one break
Stonehaven forced a marvellous save out of Michie who turned away a forceful
drive. They did pull one back on the 65 min mark when in truth we did look a
little sloppy. M.Woods had replaced the injured E.Milne at half time and did
well defending , his brother was also doing a power of work getting back to win
almost every header at Stonehaven set pieces. Morgan and Longmuir were battling
away and Keith was unlucky when he cut inside to hit a belting left foot shot
which came back off a defender. Merchant should have put us further in front in
80 mins. G.Woods got up to nod the ball down for him but the short sleeved
Merchant could only roll the ball down his shin and into the keepers hand.
(F.T.4-1) Excellent result for Halliburton. We had absolutely no failures this
afternoon. No side are ever going to dominate for 90 mins. and Stonehaven
perhaps had a 20 -25 min spell on top. Apart from that we looked very
comfortable throughout. G.Woods, Longmuir and Morgan we just that bit better
than everyone else Morgan getting topman for his dance routine in the corner in
the 1st half!
