REPORT:-

We faced Premier League opposition this afternoon when we took on Great western United in the AFC Trophy 3rd round at Woodside. Neill Milne and Nick Wood were missing as was the injured Dave Graham. Paul Andrews returned to the side to play in his first match this year! We lined up Andrews, Fulton, Shaw,Robertson,Michie. Keith, Longmuir, Morgan, M.Wood. E.Milne and Merchant. Subs were Marlow, Sim and Murdoch. We were under no illusion that today's match was going to be a severe test of both our ability and character as we had to play for each other and battle for the full 90mins. The game was contested on a huge park and this of course was also going to test our stamina! We competed very well in the first half without in truth ever really testing the goalkeeper. We were tending to sit in too deep and because of this it was difficult to get any serious attacks going. United had a chance in 10mins when slack play from Fulton let them in, the chance was squandered, then soon after Andrews made an excellent stop to keep us level. Morgan captaining the side on his 100th appearance tried a shot from long range but the keeper gathered with ease.(H.T0-0) Stuart and Jim warned that it would be expected the opposition would come at us early on and that was indeed the case. Longmuir gave the ball away and we were one down. From the kick off Morgan then repeated the gifting pass scenario and we were lucky to stay at just one down. Slowly however we got back into it and M.Woods put us level with a great strike from a tight angle. We then won a penalty after Milne was bundled down. Morgan took and missed the spot kick! The home side were rattled and if we could have scored then who knows what the result could have turned out to be. We continued to battle with Fulton having his best game to date in a Halliburton jersey. He was instrumental in breaking up attacks and setting us up on the break. In fact he even had time to try a pot shot from the half way line which almost caught out the keeper. All our good work was beginning to look like it would pay off when the roof fell in! We were attacking and both Keith and Merchant passed up good shooting chances before Utd. belted the ball clear. The long ball went over out tiring defence and Andrews was given no chance. Straight from the kick off they scored a 3rd to put a totally unfair reflection on the result.(F.T.3-1) Anyone who had witnessed this match would agree that a draw was in fact the right result. And indeed after 90mins the one all scoreline was totally justified. The home side then went in front in 92 mins before grabbing a 3rd in 93 mins! Credit to them for keeping at it, there is no doubt that our side were out on their feet after putting in so much effort. Great fighting display. Topman Graeme Fulton.
