2002 Halloween Horror Nights Events 2003

haunted houses 2003

All Night DrIvE In- To this day no one knows why this Drive-In went out of business. People have their suspicions. This Drive-In Theatre showed only slasher movies. Did reality spring from the screen? So it is rumored! The tattered Screen, still alive with horror images, flutters in the night air. Curiosity entices you to go behind the screen. You do! Unwittingly you become another victom to filmdom's maniacial maniacs. (information from Official HHN Website. Visit them for more information, but check back here because I'll have a review of the house after it opens.)

Scream House Revisited- The classic Haunted House returns.... With a vengeance! This gothic, partially burned down Victorian manor beckons you, once again, to discover the secrets of her depraved past. Whispering voices of the long forgotten warn you to stay away. Embalmed creatures, decaying and gory corpses and... Ghosts...await you on your journey through this house of horror. Your only way out is through a derelict and haunted graveyard of monumental mausoleums and desecrated graves. Have you entered the netherworld by some terrible mistake? (information from Official HHN Website. Visit them for more information, but check back here because I'll have a review of the house after it opens.)
Ship of Screams- "HMS FRIDAY" launched on the 13th of January of 1913. The ship, a very popular cruise liner at the turn of the century through the 1960's is now permanently moored at the dock-side. Found a-drift in the Atlantic Ocean with not a soul on board, the vessel was claimed and towed to port. A tourist attraction for the curious and thrill seeker in all of us. The ship shows signs of age and decrepit'ness. It feels like it's sinking. People no longer visit this once commanding empress of the seas as often. Episodes of unnatural and bizarre happenings became far too frequent. Beware! You are not welcome aboard this cruise liner. (information from Official HHN Website. Visit them for official HHN information.)

I didn't see the movie Ghost Ship, but I suppose this is what this house was based on. I thought for sure they would have used Me Ship The Olive as part of this house since it is an actual ship. I guess it served as a facade, but how you entered the house it didn't seem like it. Unlike the rumor, you didn't walk in the river of the Popeye ride either. You went into the Ship of Screams through the same place that you went into Scary Tales 2 last year. Once walking through the curtain and entering the house, you had to walk up stairs. on both sides of the stairs, there were portholes that just had ghosts or zombies or whatever they were supposed to be staring back at you. After you get upstairs, you walk through a short hallway until you get to the control room. In here, they had a steering wheel with all of those good controls, as well as the captain of the ship telling you that "you're going to die in here!" You move through other parts of the ship as well like flooding rooms, through hallways of doors filled with ghostly passengers of the ship, and lots of other cool sets like that. The Ship of Screams ended with a room filled with swinging luggage hanging from the celing, about to fall on you.

Out of all of the houses at HHN 13, this was probably my least favorite. It was still good house, but it was too typical of normal haunted houses. It wasn't really anything original. The water effects were cool, and I suppose it had some good sets, but it was too dark to really see any of them.

Funhouse of Fear- "Sneak right in and under the circus tent flap into a carnival of terror!" This dark and unexpected funhouse of chills is a three demensional, nightmare of horror. Beware! Are those sinister creatures real or mere reflections? What is real? Can you trust your eyes? Nothing is what it seems to be. Illusion, distortion, and fear are the names of the games. Your hosts, of your journey through this terror maze, are maniacial clowns of mayhem and evil. (information from Official HHN Website. Visit them for more information, but check back here because I'll have a review of the house after it opens.)
Jungle of Doom- You take a path, dark as pitch, meandering through heavy jungle undergrowth. The insistent beat of tribal drums growing ever closer. You are stopped, dead in your tracks, by a primitive, ceremonial archway. The skeletons are silent witnesses of unspeakable tortures. You are entering the burial grounds of lost souls. There is no turning back! The rest of your terrifying journey you encounter unexpected vignettes of horrific tortures and menacing zombies movie to you in a finale of deathly dimensions. (information from Official HHN Website. Visit them for official HHN information.)

I was planning on going on this haunted house earlier in the night than I actually did, but it turned out that this house didn't open until 8:00 PM instead of 7:00 since most of it is outside. It had a very long line (45 minutes) and was the longest line I waited on all night long. It was a very cool line though, and went all around Camp Jurassic, and made a few loops around it on it's different levels. Finally, the house started in the "Jungles" of Tricertops Encounter. You entered through a big archway made of bones. After that, most of the house was pushing leaves out of your way to get through, with camoflauged "zombies" jumping out at you from the bushes. Every so often you would go through a set with dancing monsters on a stage, and then would go back into the darkness. There were also some normal haunted houses scenes in the spots that you went indoors like a room of dead bodies hanging from the ceiling that you had to push through, as well as a room with burning people, complete with the smell. Jungle of Doom also featured some animatronic monsters, unlike all of the other houses (I think).

This house also had some very complex sets, but like the Ship of Screams, it was too dark to see them well. You had to look hard to actually see them. Overall, it wasn't a bad house, but it could have been much better. One thing that they had in the house in this location last year that I think they could of used again was the long fog filled outdoor pathways with no lights at all so you couldn't see a foot in front of you...

Infestation- This is probably all that remains of the Extreme House idea. For this show, located on the stage in the Lost Continent in front of the Enchanted Oak Tree, the Director is giving Scream (screen) Tests for his next movie. Park guests, 18 or over could sign up to be part of this show. Three people were infested per show, and it involved them being strapped to a chair, then having a box put over their head, and the Director spinning a wheel. The first time the Director spun the wheel while I was watching, it landed on directors choice, and he chose to put Scorpions on someones head. The next victom recieved beetles, and the last and final person spun to recieve snakes. And that was lots and lots of snakes too. There wasn't too much to this show, but at least Halloween Horror Nights is back to having at least two shows. It seemed inspired by fear factor though.
