On wednesday 29th August 2001 David Blaine went on an English breakfast show called GMTV for an interview. The presenter said that it was the weirdest TV interview ever.......it even made the newspapers here in England. Read on to find out what happened in David's interview.
NOTE: You will not find this interview anywhere else on the net
Eamonn (Presenter): It's fantastic to be able to introduce a true great in the world of showbusiness. His name is David Blaine, probably the most controversial and exciting magician of the moment.
Clip of Blaine performing a trick in New York in which a book catches fire.
Eamonn: How does he do that? I'm sure your not going to tell me.
Blaine stares straight ahead and says nothing.
Eamonn: Indeed. That's what I assumed. Of course your famous in this country for being in a car advert doing tricks too.
Blaine nods head
Eamonn: Is it a trick to talk?
Blaine shakes head
Eamonn: What's your next trick going to be?
Blaine: (Long pause) It's a stunt I'm going to do that I've always wanted to do since I was a little boy. I've dreamed of doing it. The problem with it is the entire group of people that were involved to create it have backed out so I'm going to have to do it all on my own. And the problem with that is that I'll probably die.
Eamonn: Will anyone miss you? Are there people who advise you and beg you not to do these things?
Blaine: I don't think people understand the danger of this next one.
Eamonn: When you were growing up did you see yourself as different in any way?
Blaine: I don't see it that way.
Eamonn: Are you an illusionist, a trickster or are you a stuntman? How do you describe yourself?
Blaine: (Still staring intensely at Eamonn) Just a showman.
Eamonn: Is this part of the show this mean and moody persona and the eyes?
Blaine shakes head
Eamonn: It's just you?
He nods and raises his left hand which has a picture of an eye on the palm
Eamonn: What is the eye on the hand?
Blaine: It's protection from death
Eamonn: (Momentarily speechless) Ooh. Mmm. Well, you've brushed with it before a few times, we're going to see the trick with the ice - tell us what you did here? (Looking at clip)
Blaine: I froze myself on a block of ice for three days and three nights until I alomost died.
Eamonn: So what do you do? Do you lower your metabolism? Is it a death wish that you have?
Blaine: No, it's not a death wish. It's just that I love doing these things.
Eamonn: Is it important to you to be more famous and more immortal than someone like Houdini?
Blaine: I just like doing what I do.
Eamonn: Like burying yourself in a coffin?
Blaine: I read an Edgar Allen Poe short story called the Premature Burial and it said the worst thing a human can do is be buried alive.
Eamonn: (Watching pictures of Blaine being buried) Well, there you go David, I reckon life around your dinner table must be fun. There must be a great lot of conversation about death and the meaning of it and I hope the evil eye protects you and keeps you safe.
Blaine laughs and says nothing.
Eamonn: That's what I'd say. (Shakes his hand and turns to co-presenter Fiona Phillips as Blaine leaves) Different.
Eamonn: (Later) What planet was he from?
