Monthly Feature

Monthly Feature: IS IT SO EASY TO CONQUER ENVY?

There are six obstacles to leading a life of happiness ad gaining the knowledge of the Self. Known as six enemies, these are kama (lust), krodha (anger), lobha (covetousness), moha (delusion), mada (pride) and matsarya. Matsarya can be translated as a combination of jealousy and envy. We generally use the words jealousy and envy interchangeably. However there is a subtle difference. Jealousy is the feeling of hurt one experiences when he wants to get something but it has gone to someone else. If two people compete for a certain thing, one gets it and the other doesn’t, the negative hurt feelings of the one that lost it is called jealousy. This is more of an evil feeling because someone else has gained rather than the feeling that he/she has lost. Here, the feeling that the other has it is more painful to the person rather than the sorrow that he did not get it. If both do not get it, the sorrow vanishes and one is happy that the other also did not get it!

Envy is different. Envy is the mind which feels hurt when anything good happens to someone or when any one gets a windfall, even if it does not concern him at all, even if he does not try for it and even if he is not at loss by not possessing it.

Of the six obstacles, the remaining five have at least a semblance of logic behind them such as our ego, the desires and proclivities, the personal loss and gains, happiness and sadness. So to conquer them with mere reasoning can be difficult. But envy is not like that. It has no logic behind it. It exists as a shadow of the other weaknesses present in us. Many of us feel that we do not have this weakness in us. But, if we carefully examine our feelings, especially when we hear of the good fortune of the others we can see the flash of envy in us. If we are careful to identify it every time we feel it we can conquer envy. If we conquer this easy enemy by practice we can learn the methods of conquering the other five enemies too.

Let us see what Baba said about envy in his own style. Baba once said to Nanasaheb Chandorkar, "Of the six enemies it is the easiest to conquer envy. Envy can cause nothing to come or go from us. It is envy if we cannot bear to see the others prosper or benefit. We cannot bear it if they get a good status or wealth and we put about malicious gossip about them. We feel happy if they suffer a loss or suffer hardships. Is this correct? If somebody gets a benefit what is the harm to you? But people never think about this aspect. We should be able to feel happy if some one benefits and we too should try to get the same. That person has not snatched our share and he got what was his due by the play of his karma. What is the use of feeling bad about his good fortune? That is why we should conquer envy first."

Devotees Experiences

Baba - Our Saviour

Rashmi Gandhi

My husband is an engineer. We had our own business in India. We got green card, our kids are ready for the college, and they want to come here. We couldn’t afford the money from India so we came with them Oct. 27 1995. We stayed in Hudson, WI. My husband got first job in assembly work, and it was very hard for him, at that time we have no car but by Baba’s grace got rides from a American family and they never take any money for the ride. Later he found a job at Circuit City and than he got job in another company as a Sales Engineer. That was his real work, then he was laid off, and he got a job again. After two years, he was again laid off. We are nervous, but I believe in BABA and I have full faith in Baba. What he will do is good for us and I am not worried for any thing. I pray to Baba that every thing is in his hand and he always keeps me safe. After six months, husband found work as a Mfg. Rep that pays only a commission but I had full trust in Baba. He never got less than his salary, and we never had hard time. Always we keep the paycheck first at Baba's CHARAN and I pray to him, "you know what is in side and you should take care of my family", and than we open our check. Baba always gives us enough commission so we can run our house very well. Baba's blessing are with us and  he is taking care of my family. When we start new work we start from Thursday and we never get in trouble. Our business’s name is Sai Enterprise, we bought a town home, and its name is Sai Preet. I don’t need anything, only I need his blessings and I need his BHAKTI. Before I start go anywhere first I give PRANAM to BABA and than I leave form my house. Baba is always with me and I am very happy. I am a college graduate, but I have no good communication skill, so I have not good job but still I never have hard time. Baba is with me so my work is not heavy work and I never work on weekend. I am working Mon. to Fri, day between 7 am to 3 pm. and it is very close to my house, I can go without car. Always Baba is with me so all problems are gone and we are very happy. Jai Sai Ram.

Unseen miracles!

Behind every prayer and parayan (reading of holy books) there lies a desire, the quest for a miracle. Nice are those experiences where the seeker gets what he desires. It is the experiences of several devotees to receive the good news, from seemingly nowhere, beyond the logic, at the end of a sincere prayer. What of those who do not see the light at the end of the tunnel? Did Sai not hear them? Are those prayers not sincere?

A prayer is always sincere. The mere thought of surrendering our ego, even for a moment, at the feet of Sadguru and invoking His grace to the betterment of our existence is a significant step. However, not being able to receive the expected or wanted may not construe as a failure.

It does help one to know why the prayers aren’t answered always. Why is that Sai withholds His miracles, seemingly to a few "unfortunate" ones? A careful analysis may help our little minds to some extent. Next time, if our prayers are unanswered, let us remember those occasions carefully and move on. Let our faith be doubled and let our love to Sainath is unchanged. It will be revealed later, that the prayers that were "unanswered" were a part of a much bigger plan. It will be known that, what happened is in our best interests. It will also be known that it may not be a dealing between Sai and the self, but a part of a grander revelation. "Seek my treasure. My coffers are open", said Sai. The best miracles are the ones that are unseen.
