Eveline Wright was born 23 August, 1823 Liberty, Union, Indiana,
to Joseph P and Martha Patsy Grisham Barner Wright.
Joseph P. Wright was born 7 March, 1802 in Newberry County So.
Carolina, to John and Vasthi Brooks Wright. Martha was born 14 May,
1801, in Fayette County Ind. to John Barner and Judith Ladd.
Eveline was the oldest of seven children two had apparently died
young.
Eveline and Ira Bartlett Elmer were married in 1842 in Ill.
Their first three children bor born in Adams County Ill. They are
Angeline , Oliver and Martha Louisa.
Ire was a member of the Mormon or LDS Church. when the Mormons
were driven from Illinois in 1846 the Elmers moved with them into
Iowa. They endured much presecution and hardship suring this time.
Melissa was born 29 Nov. 1849 in Lee County Iowa. Eveline was
baptized into the Mormon Church 22 August, 1850.
They were finally able to come to Utah to join the main group of
Saints in 1852, with the Uriah Curtis Co. They arrived in Salt Lake
Cityin Oct. 1852. The next spring their daughter Harriet was born
14 May, 1853 ai Whites Fort near Salt Lake City. Amanda Melissa was
born at West Jordan 25 April, 1856.
They moved to Payson where Ira's father, John Elmer was living.
Their son Ira Bartlett was born there 5 July, 1858 and Susan Maria
was born there 5 Dec. 1860.
At the October Conference 1861 many families were called to help
settle Utah's Dixie at St. George. The Elmers and Their married
daughter and family, the James Mc Inellys were among those who
were called to go there. They arrived in St. George 2 Dec. 1861.
Several other families were already there.
It began to rain on Christmas day 1861 and rained off and on for
40 days. This caused much hardship and much flooding there.
Eveline was a midwife and her service was used and appreciated
very much. She had learned how to use herbs for h ealing. She had
learned some secrets of healing from the Indians. She was very
good at doctoring besides being a Midwife. Later when doctors were
in the area many asked her advice on problems they had.
Her daughter Susan also learned to be a Midwife, And maybe other
daughters did as well. Ira's second wife in Plural Marriage, also
became a Midwife and probably learned it from EVeline.
While living in St. George Ira, with Evelines consent, took a
second wife, Sarah Selanah Leicht, a convert from Enbland. She had
worked for the Elmers. They were married 15 June,1869.
Eveline had two more children who were born in Gt. George, Hyrum,
born 26 Aug. 1862 and their last child, Eveline Elizabeth was born
3 Dec. 1864. Eveline was 41 years old then. When Ira and Sarah
were married Eveline Elizabeth was four and one half years old.
The family moved to Panguitch, Utah. They lived here 5 or 6
years. Eveline was a councelor in the Relief Society, either here
or later in Cannonville.
They moved to Cannonville by 1879. Ira became Bishop there from
1880 to 1884. While living here Ira, Eveline, Sarah and some of
their children went to the St. George Temple and did temple work
for some of their family who had died. They went in Dec. 1881 and
again in Nov. 1883. Eveline's father, Jopseph Wright was baptized
7 March, 1883. He went to the temple with them in 1883. He was
81. He was baptized on his 81st birthday.
In the 1880 census Eveline and 2 children were listed in the
Panguitch census and Ira and Sarah were listed in the Cannonville
census records. Joseph Wright was living with Eveline then.
Ira and Sarah moved to Pima, Arizona in 1885. I doubt that
Eveline went with them. Later that year they moved to Juarez,
Mexico. Eveline was living in Panguitch. He daughter Susan Jones
was living there. Perhaps others of her children were living there
or nearby.
Eveline died 7 August, 1887. The same day in Juarez, Mexico a
daughter was born to Ira and Sarah.
Eveline had lived a very useful life, being of service to many
others. She had pioneered in many new settlements on new frontiers
and had endured many hardships for the Gospel. She received a
Patriarchal Blessing in 1871. She was given many great promises if
she remained faithful. She was a very faithful wife, mother and
church worker during her life. She was nearly 64 at her death.
