Alder (Alnus glutinosa)
Spreading tree or shrub up to 20m tall, with dark brown, rugged bark and hairless twigs. Leaves roundish, toothed and blunt-tipped, almost hairless. Catkins (male long and yellowish, female egg-shaped and purplish); Feb-March, before leaves. Fruit a small cone.
