Beech (Fagus sylvatica)
Spreading tree up to 30m tall; bark smooth, grey, buds red-brown. Leaves pointed oval, shallowly toothed, veins obvious at edge, silky white beneath at first. Flowers greenish, (male in a roundish tassel, female standing up), in pairs; April-May, same time as leaves. Fruit a warm brown nut enclosed in a bristly husk.

Common tree, found especially in the strip of woodland.
