| Spreading tree up to 30m tall; bark smooth, grey, buds red-brown. Leaves pointed oval, shallowly toothed, dark bronze. Flowers greenish, (male in a roundish tassel, female standing up), in pairs; April-May, same time as leaves. Fruit a warm brown nut enclosed in a bristly husk. Cultivated variety of Beech, found in woodland behind car-park wall. Spotters' score: 7 ref: p.36/4
