Wych Elm (Ulmus glabra)
Spreading tree up to 40m tall, with rugged bark; twigs roughly hairy when young. Leaves broad oval to elliptical, roughly hairy. Flowers small, unstalked, with a reddish tuft; March-April, before leaves. Fruit a pale green notched disc, the seed in the centre.

Fairly common tree: best example is in the gatehouse garden.
