| Coarse, green plant with hollow, ridged, leafless, jointed stems with whorls of unbranched branches. The fertile stems appear earlier on, with a spore-carrying 'cone' at the tip. A patch-forming, tenacious weed. Quite easy to find in meadow - and unweeded flowerbeds ! Spotters' score: 5 ref: p.198/4
