How to read the data pages

Each plant has its own feature page.

The main attraction of these pages is the photographs, all taken on location in the school grounds. The picture attempts to give an accurate 'feel' for the plant, as well as showing clearly one or two of its key features. Our aim is to improve the quality and content of these pictures over time.

Left of the picture is the plant data.

The description is taken from our chosen reference book, adapted to be as un-technical as possible. The first sentence is about the general appearance of the plant, its height, stem, branches, hairiness, and so on. Height is described as follows: 'low' - up to 10cm; 'short' - 10-30cm; 'medium' - 30-60cm; 'tall' - over 60cm. The next sentence is about the leaves, their shape and colour, their size and number, and so on. The next is about the flowers, their shape and colour, size and number, followed by the months in which the plant is likely to be in flower. Finally, the seed or fruits are described. For fuller or more detailed description, refer to the book itself or any other thorough source.

After the description, we have made a further brief note or comment to help find and identify the plant, including an indication of its main location(s) within the grounds. Finally, there is the book reference (page number/item number) and the 'spotter's score'.
