Questions about Ultimate in General
What equipment do I need to play ultimate?
To play ultimate all you really need are a pair of running shoes and a 175 g Frisbee (usually called a disc). Most people play in cleats for better traction.
Where can I get a disc?
Standard ultimate discs are usually custom ordered from the U.S. and sold by word of mouth, although some stores do carry them. HUC will be selling discs at the beginning of the season. They usually sell for between $10 and $12.
How physically demanding is ultimate?
Ultimate is as physically demanding as you want it to be. You can run a lot and get a good work out, or concentrate on your throws and move as needed. Aggressive play and contact are not allowed in ultimate.
What kind of people play ultimate?
All shapes and sizes of people play ultimate. Although stereotyped as a hippie sport, you'll find everyone from high school students to professionals, from athletes to couch potatoes playing this game.

What are the rules of the game?

Do I have to join with a team or can I join as an individual?
If you don't have a team you are welcome to join as an individual The league will work with you to assign you to a team.
How can I find a team/players for my team?
Registration Day will be the best place to hook up teams and players. If you can't make registration day, individual players should email captains or leave a note on the league bulletin board.
What league should I play in?
The leagues are broken down into junior age group and then three different skill levels. When deciding between A,B, and C leagues, you should consider your time availability, your current skill level and how much you would like to learn in a given year. It is ultimately up to you where you play. The skills levels assigned to each league are strictly an average, and shouldn't deter you from choosing the league in which you'd really prefer to play.
How big should my team be?
In order to ensure that your team does not have to default, especially if you are a team of new players, you should carry between 15 and 18 people on your roster.
What do I need to do to register?
In order to fully register and receive the shoe tag that indicates your league membership you have to 1) complete, sign and submit a waiver, 2) complete individual on-line registration, 3) pay in full. For more information, check out the registration page.
What rules do I need to know?
Your enjoyment of the game will be greatly influenced by how well you know the rules. Please view them (html, pdf) and take time to get familiar with them.
What is expected of me as a HUC member?
As a HUC member, you are expected to show up for games on time and play with spirit. Aggressive play will not be tolerated, and teams forfeiting more than two games may be subject to penalties (e.g. disqualification from playoffs) at the board's discretion.
How long should the games be and when should they start?
Games should be to 15 points and should start promptly at 6:30 p.m.
Who sets up the playing field?
Each team captain will be given four cones and will be responsible for setting up one endzone of the playing field.
Where do I find the schedule?
The schedule for your league will be posted on the web site and in some cases also emailed to captains.
What are spirit scores and how should they be assessed?
Spirit scores are a way of praising your opponent for their spirited behaviour (on a scale of 0 - 5). Spirit is vital to the Hamilton Ultimate Club. Teams are encouraged to cheer each other and compete in a spirited manner on and off the field. For more information about spirit and how to assess spirit scores, click here.
What if a team is late?
If your team does not have three players of each gender on the line at the game start time (6:30) and your team does, you may count one point against them for every five minutes that passes before they can field a full team. If fifteen minutes passes and they still do not have a full team, a default will be assessed against them. Defaults will be recorded as a 6-0 win for the present team.
What if my team can't make a scheduled game?
If your team cannot make a scheduled game, you can negotiate with the other captain for a reschedule. The opposing captain is not obligated to reschedule and failure to reach an agreement on rescheduling will result in a default for the team that cannot make the originally scheduled game. It is the responsibility of the captain that can't make the game to negotiate a new time that is to the satisfaction of the opposing captain and also to inform the league director of any changes a minimum of 48 hours in advance of the originally scheduled game.
What if it's raining on game day?
Games are played rain or shine. At the first sign of lightning players will clear the field and the game will be called. Games with a total of 6 points scored (e.g. 4-2) will be recorded as such. Games with a total of 5 points or less scored will be rescheduled as time permits.
How does a team qualify for playoffs?
A team qualifies for playoffs by not defaulting more than twice and by having its players attend a minimum of five regular league games.
How will playoffs be run?
Playoff schedules will be determined by the individual league director and updates will be given on the web site.
What if I don't like the way this league is run?
The Hamilton Ultimate Club is run by a group of volunteers. If you don't like the way things are going, you are more than welcome to attend board meetings and offer some input and potential solutions. Please make your voice is heard early on and through captain's meetings to make sure your views are represented. |
