Worship & Services

One practical way of finding out how Unitarian Universalists worship is by attending one of our services (click here for times & location ).  Child care is available during the service upon advance request.  You may wish to arrive several minutes early on your first Sunday with us.  Be sure to sign the visitor's list to receive our newsletter; it's a great way to find out what is going on with worship, fellowship events, and opportunities to serve the larger community.

When you visit, you will meet lay worship leaders as well as area Unitarian Universalist ministers.  Although we do not yet have our own full-time minister, we benefit from the diversity of four area UU ministers who present 4th Sunday services on a rotating basis.  We also tap into area ministers and lay people of other faiths who enjoy dialogue with our congregation.  You will find a hymnbook like no other with readings and music from many religious traditions and cultural sources.

Our services always open with the Lighting of the Chalice (see sample below), a universal symbol of our religious tradition.  Services typically include readings, hymns and an opportunity to share joys and concerns.  We often begin our service with a Story for All Ages, directed toward our children, but with a lesson for everyone.  Topics presented by our lay leaders or by UU ministers feature a variety of themes that stimulate dialogue, introspection and action consistent with the Unitarian Universalist Principles.  Many of our lay led services are based on materials we receive from the Church of the Larger Fellowship (CLF) at the UUA.  Each service ends with the extinguishing of the chalice flame, followed by coffee and refreshments for fellowship, meeting and greeting.

To find out more about who the Unitarian Universalist Association is we highly recommend that you visit our Introduction to the UUA .

Lighting of the Chalice

Out of love for the human community we light this flame.
Its light is a symbol of the triumph of truth over superstition and fear.
It is for learning and understanding.
We light it with hope to make this a better world.

The above reading is one of many examples.  For a list of similar readings from the Unitarian Universalist Association please visit the UUA Index of First Lines for Chalice Lightings.
