The curriculum:
Our Arabic curriculum emphasizes the necessity of a parallel training in all the fluency language skills; oral comprehension, speaking, reading and writing.The Program utilizes Arabic grammar texts which develop reading and writing. In addition, to assist with comprehension are exercises and Nusoos (texts from Quran and Hadeeth).

Test to determine your level:
If you do not know your level in the Arabic language, we will help choose what is right for you by testing you. Since we feel you are the best judge of your abilities, we will make the decision of your level together.

Texts to be used:
We have compiled a list of texts in both Arabic and English which teach the Arabic language. You will have the option of purchasing these books to aid in instruction. These books include: "Arabic, a complete course for beginners" and "The basic rules of Arabic Grammar." (a text in Arabic published in Egypt).

CURRICULUM:
The curriculum developed for Al-Safa School is very rich and extensive. Students progress will be measured by meeting a set of objectives as well as by an exam at the end of each course. The student objectives for each level of instruction are detailed below.

BEGNING STANDARD ARABIC:

This is for students who have no knowledge of Arabic or who have a very limited knowledge of Arabic letters and vocabulary. Instruction will begin in English and slowly phase in Arabic. This class will take approximately 35 hours.


By the end of the course, the student will be able to:

1. Explain the concept of Tauhid, the significance and history of the Prophet Muhammed(saw)'s life and history of the Quran's revelation, in English.
2. Recognize the sounds of the letters in the Arabic alphabet.
3. Recite the numbers, in Arabic, from 1 to 10, basic colors and shapes.
4. Understand and recite basic Arabic vocabulary about the family, school, animals and plants.
5. Recite the days of the week, in Arabic.
6. Identify the months in the Islamic calendar.
7. Identify the pronouns of speaking in the first person and basic verbs.
8. Show progress in learning the Arabic language on a test administered by the teacher.

ELEMENTARY ARABIC:
This course emphasizes the functional usage of Arabic in the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students are encouraged to be creative with the language in and out of class. This class will take 40 hours.

By the end of the course,the student will be able to:
1. Read the shorter chapters of the Holy Qur'an out loud.
2. Read and write the 99 names of Allah in Arabic.
3. Write a simple sentence in Arabic.
4. Read and write the names of the solar calendar months in Arabic.
5. Put the parts of a sentence in proper order, given a set of phrases.
6. Understand and verbally identify colors, numbers and shapes, in Arabic.
7. Understand and verbally recite the parts of human, names of animals and plants.
8. Use Arabic pronouns of second and third person.
9. Translate simple sentences from English to Arabic and vice versa.
10. Use Prepositions in a sentence.
11. Recite the numbers, in Arabic, from 11 to 99.
12. Show progress in learning the Arabic language on a test administered by the teacher.

INTERMEDIATE ARABIC:
This course is proficiency oriented. Authentic reading in modern standard and classical Arabic and the understanding and application of grammatical and stylistic rules are emphasized. This class will take 40 hours.

By the end of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Fluently read the Holy Quran, from the beginning, out loud.
2. Comprehend information given about Islam and the Holy Quran in Arabic.
3. Translate short paragraphs from English into Arabic and vice versa.
4. Tell the time in Arabic.5. Use pronoun suffixes.
6. Identify word roots and origins.
7. Use demonstrative nouns.
8. Distinguish between different kinds of verbs.
9. Use additional adjectives in a sentence.
10. Distinguish between feminine and masculine words.
11. Use the negative form of nouns and verbs.
12. Understand the single and plural forms of nouns.
13. Identify possessive, definite and indefinite nouns.
14. Use and understand greetings in Arabic.
15. Recite the numbers, in Arabic, from 99 to million.
16. Use question words.
17. Write a paragraph in Arabic.
18. Show progress in learning the Arabic language on a test administered by the teacher.

ADVANCED ARABIC:
This course surveys in some depth the range of modern Arabic literary styles. A representative selection of texts in the various modes, genres, and discourses of modern Arabic literature furnish the subject matter of close reading and analysis in the e course. Like the assigned texts, class discussions, exams, and papers will be conducted in Arabic. Students are also encouraged to keep a weekly journal in Arabic to build up vocabulary, develop writing skills, and mark progress. Continuous attention to Arabic syntax, grammar, stylistics, and prosody serve to round and to enhance the students' competence in all spheres of modern literary Arabic. This class will take 45 hours.

By the end of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Comprehend the history of the Quran and Hadeeth, the stories of the Prophet(saw) and his Sahabah, all in Arabic.
2. Read, fluently, the Quran and Hadeeth.
3. Translate texts, such as short stories, poetry, and Hadeeth from English to Arabic and vice versa.
4. Analyze of text and grammar.
5. Explain the history of the Arabic language.
6. Write Essays and Compositions in Arabic.
7. Hold a simple conversation in Arabic.
8. Read Poetry and short novels in Arabic.
9. Use comparative and superlative adjectives.
10. Use adverbs and relative pronouns in sentences.
11. Use some, all, each and every in Arabic.
12. Identify conjunction followed by verbs.
13. Use still and almost.
14. Use greetings, polite phrases and forms of addressing people in conversation with others.
15. Form conditional sentences.
16. Understand and use adjective of color and physical attribute.
17. Use weak verbs.
18. Show progress in learning the Arabic language on a test administered by the teacher.
