CARING FOR FANS

Fans should be
handled as little as possible. Open and close them slowly to avoid damage. Store
fans in a
box, individually wrapped in acid free tissue. Photographic archival materials are an
appropriate means for protecting your fans. Framing is not recommended for fans as
they will eventually warp and fade from the stress of being opened and exposed to the
light. Framing also obstructs the view of the reverse, which often contains as much
artistic and historical value as the front. If you already have a framed fan, protect it
from sunlight and heat. These are some of the reasons museums do not exhibit fans for an
extended period of time.
