Analysis for The Meadows
March 20, 2001

Race #1

# 5 AMAZING HENRY Hopefully will find the track dry and fast. This one has trouble when raced not on a lead and has trouble with traction on the wet surfaces. Looks to try to wire these.
# 2 TODDS BULLET Gains major post relief and Dave Palone returns to drive. Best case scenario would be a conservative pocket trip.
# 3 JURASSIC COURT Was claimed last week and remains in class. Trainer Mark Goldberg knows the key to this one. He is void of any controlling speed but has the stamina to go the first over route.
# 1 SLIGHTLY EXPENSIVE Has inside post and has been getting stronger in the latter stages of the mile. He is the one that should add some value to the exotics.

Race #2

# 6 HEIDI’S CONNECTION This one has been showing major signs of life recently as she has been forwardly placed on the off going at Northfield two back and The Meadows last out. She tired very late in the mile and should love the fast track the weatherman has predicted.
# 1 CHERISHED IMAGE Is another of the front end types entered and appears to be able to hit this ticket.
# 8 OXFORD HANOVER The Roony barn sends out one that I picked last week. He remained flat and seemed to have some trot at the wire. Look for a more aggressive style tonight.
# 2 MAIN GATE SHIMM Gets the nod based on inside post, value potential and slight drop in class.

Race #3

# 7 MATT ON THE ROCKS Drops in class from the 4 claiming rank. I think he towers over these but will be at very low odds. I would use him as a key in the win position in the exotics.
# 3 C GORDON Has been sharp of late and may be ready to make his presence known. It was last week that he left alertly and settled in third. He sat patiently and then out sprinted the early leaders in the lane. It appeared that he had more in the tank.
# 1 NUCLEAR CHANCE Was claimed last out and is now in the Marcus Marashian barn. This barn may be small in number of horses but MM does have a way of getting the most out of his stock. I would love to hear he will be going to a open bridle. Looks to offer odds in excess of 4/1.
# 4 SEEL-BINDER Is another one on the improvement trail. He lacks early speed but stamina might land him on the superfecta ticket again.

Race #4

# 1 BEST WINDS Has not competed in this series on his preferred surface condition. His two breaks can now be attributed to his not grabbing the wet surface. The forecast is for sun during the day and dry at night. BW will see a marked improvement tonight.
# 6 CAMERON SPUR Is the early speed that should hold up most of the mile. Looks to offer escort service to my top pick.
# 3 HE CAN SCOOT Raced better than I expected and is one front end type that should benefit from the fast surface.
# 2 HAWAIIAN MACHO MAN I used this one based on inside post position and the fact he tends to race near the front end types.

Race #5

# 8 AMERICAN WINTER Hails from a powerful barn and has won 6 of 7 over this surface and class level this season. It is his race to lose.
# 1 JOEY I Makes his first start at this level this year. I can find nothing wrong as he has early speed, inside post and a heart that should not fail.
# 4 TIME WILL TELL Looks to get in the 3 or 4 hole and wait till the lane before hitting his best stride.
# 5 KEYSTONE
QUAZAR
Is added as a hunch play and may offer some value to the exotics. Trivia: Who is the only horse to get scratched out of a race but to reenter at 1 minute to post? Yes, this one did. A few years ago, he was the morning line favorite that was scratched but did race and win with a payoff of $29.00. It is only one of the many stories that I experienced at the Meadows.

Race #6

# 4 MM GRANDE Has a ton of pace but has trouble in the turns. If connections can correct his problem, he will be moving up the conditions in a hurry.
# 7 F J’s JACKIE Put in a solid effort last week and looks to be a strong contender tonight.
# 3 FINE VINE Ran into a monster last week and should be closer this time around.
# 2 POLAND SPRING There is not much else in here to like so this one is to be considered as a superfecta throw in.

Race #7

# 1 SCOOTER REE’ Is my long shot play of the day. He looks as fast as any entered and is starting from the rail. Driver Dan Charlino is capable and has most of his wins in the double digit range.
# 7 NIGHTS JET Has been claimed the last three weeks and should be live in this race on the class rise. He seems to race well either from the front or back (contrary to what I thought about him last week). Looks to be getting some major support by the wagering public.
# 3 HANDY DAN Drops in class to the level where his was claimed. Looks to be on the engine tonight.
# 4 SEARED HARROW Is one game war horse and has the best results when closing from mid pack. He has some decent acceleration which may be aided by his drop in class.

Race #8

# 1 GRAN SIDEKICK Driver Elliot Deaton makes his initial start of the season at the Meadows. I do not recall his racing here in the past but I am familiar with his talents. This driver is capable and has the horse that can control the pace. Looks to be around 8/5 at post time.
# 9 LANIES REPLICA Has won two straight over this surface and may be one tough competitor tonight. Only post hinders his chances.
# 4 CARPET GRIFF Has the closing speed or early speed available in his arsenal. Looks to add value to the exotics.
# 3 FRUGAL ECHO N Hails from a powerful barn and is making his first start since the qualifier on 3/11. He is a fast but unruly trotter that if all things go well, may be the one to beat. I feel there is something amiss in his form and may take a while to get to top form.

Race #9

# 3 FIERY SAHBRA In a tough race to handicap, I went to this 2nd lasix starter. It may be a hunch but he seems to have enough speed. Tonight’s post should offer him the best chance at winning as he has had in a while.
# 1 MAGIC SPORT Has the rail and early speed. Looks to be a consistent sort that may be used as a key in the exotics.
# 7 FREEWAY HANOVER Raced well in his first start since arriving from his contests over the flying turns. He is fast as any entered and may be the public’s stick at 2/1.
# 2 DREAM COLORS Has early speed and inside post. Hopefully that is enough to land him on the superfecta ticket.

Race #10

# 2 DANCE QUEST This one was my top pick last week and looks to have been driven in a conservative manner. Connections may of known she hates the off going and should be tough on the fast track.
# 3 TP SWEET PEA Won last out with a very tiring track which was listed as sloppy. Driver/trainer/owner is a provisional driver license holder and may offer value at the windows.
# 1 CHILLY DUSK Has the rail and loves to mix it up early. She seems fast enough to compete at this level.
# 7 GOGOSAFLYIN Makes second start lasix and seems to be fast enough to hit the superfecta ticket.

Race #11

# 4 TIP THE BOAT Did make his late run but caught a wet surface last week. He now drops back to the level where he gained his most recent win. Looks to be at odds of near 4/1 at post time.
# 2 OG’S BULLE YANKEE This one is an unknown quantity but appears to have enough early speed to keep himself in touch with this field. His stamina may be in question though.
# 1 O DANNY BOY This one is pure closing speed and with the rail, may get out past the half and try to grind the mile out on the outside.
# 7 BORN GOOD FRIDAY Has been racing well of late but is prone to the bounce after taken some time off. His last race was at the end of February and he may be a little short tonight.

Race #12

# 1 STAN This three year old S J’s Photo offspring has plenty of talent but is a little green in racing. Tonight’s lesson is to learn to get away clean from the rail and be first over at the half.
# 2 KT HANNA Making great strides in conditioning recently, this one is the real deal and can race both on the wet and dry surfaces.
# 5 KIT’s PICK Closed willingly last out and makes third start with vitamin (L), lasix.
# 7 HE CAN TROT Has decent closing speed but is a few bricks shy of a full load. He may be a little short as he was scratched sick on 3/6.

Race #13

# 2 CAMTASTIC DARTS Has seen money early and late in his last two races. I am sure he will be stronger this week as he gains inside post and will be racing on a fast, speed favoring track. Looks to be the public’s stick again.
# 3 PEE WEE SPUR Has a knack of hitting the board as he uses closing speed. There are no others entered that can out kick him in the lane. Only question is how far he will have to come first over? This answer may leave him a few lengths short at the wire.
# 9 BIG Z LUGGER Is a pure early speed type that can hold his position a long way. Looks to be the second choice by the wagering public though I feel the 9 hole may cause him a little grief.
# 4 JD’s MILLENNIUM Is used as a hunch play and may offer some value to the exotics.
