The amazing cleolinda has also translated some articles from the Spanish press. Herewith...
**Pictures (check them out in the pictures section) from the Spanish press junket and an interview (a RealPlayer clip). The story is here but cleo's translation follows:
ANTHONY HOPKINS: " I’M NOT HANNIBAL, I JUST PLAY THE PART"
**The name of Anthony Hopkins is irremediably united to that of a dark creature, eyes blood-red and filled with love for a woman whom it does not know whether to love, eat, adore, or mutilate: Hannibal Lecter: the most aberrant cannibal of the history of film...
Hopkins again embodies the protagonist of the film that disturbed our dreams: The silence of the lambs, in a film directed by Ridley Scott from the novel by Thomas Harris.
With Anthony Hopkins we have had the opportunity to chat and he himself clarified some of the methodological doubts that arose when we analyzed the personality of Dr. Lecter: " Hannibal is the symbol of flight from mediocrity, of the puritanical and homogenized thinking that comes about when a society o and homogenous thought that arises when a society falls prey to a certain mathematical certainty. It’s always better to look inside ourselves, and Hannibal looks without prejudice."
But Hannibal is not a sequel to The silence of the lambs, but a continuation where the figure of the cannibal more is more thoroughly explored. "If there were a third film, I would like to get more into the relationship that Hannibal has with Clarice. He feels love for her, adoration. That strength she carries inside is what makes Hannibal love her beyond just the physical. There’s a scene in the film where he asks her if she would go off with him, and she says, ‘Not in a million years.’ Hannibal replies: ‘That’s my girl.’ It’s the answer he wanted to hear, and he loves her for that."
The myth of the cannibal generates more revulsion today than any other psychosis, but it doesn’t bother Hopkins to have his name associated with Hannibal: " I understand his principles, but I’m not him, I only play the part. On top of that, to be Hannibal as a fictional character was really a turning point in my career and ten years after The silence of the lambs, it’s great to shake his hand again.”
A couple of weeks before filming began, Hopkins rented the film that earned him the approval of the Academy, the critics, and, what’s more important, the box office. Nowadays, the Academy of Hollywood, the approval of the critic and what it is more important, the approval of the ticket office. Nowadays, he assures that money doesn’t matter to him anymore: " I have a good agent, " he says, and smiles.
The roles of Hopkins onscreen have ranged from Dr. Van Helsing in Coppola’s Dracula to Don Pedro de Valdivia in The Mask of Zorro where he costarred with Antonio Banderas. And after a brilliant career of more than forty years he notes he’s never made a comedy. " I suppose that it is part of my character. I enjoy my own company and I don’t keep anyone near for more than an hour or two. I’m a loner and I’ve always identified with characters like Iago in Richard III, Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca, the Phantom of the Opera, Quasimodo, characters whose darkness isn’t just in deformed bodies but in odd minds. I never get the girl, unlike actors like Leonardo Di Caprio," he says, and laughs again.
We have enjoyed the actor. With his beatific presence, with that "savoir faire" that only the great personalities are able to transmit.**
**Here's another link with cleo's translation below:
‘HANNIBAL’ GENERATES GREAT EXPECTATIONS ACROSS THE INTERNET
**Hannibal”, the long-awaited sequel to the 1991 horror film “Silence of the Lambs” (El silencio de los inocentes), is receiving the most attention on the Internet and in the press since the renewal of the “Star Wars” series in 1999.
At a cost of $80 million and 18 months of filming, the fearsome serial killer Hannibal Lecter will appear again on American screens February 9, in what promises to be a story that will turn its spectators’ stomachs like never before. The film, directed by Ridley Scott, famous for “Alien” (El octavo pasajero [note: apparently the Spanish translate this title as “The Eighth Passenger”) and starring Anthony Hopkins, still has not been shown to the critics. But the trailer shown in American theaters and the eager commentaries on the Internet of early screenings on the Internet prove that they’ve left their fans awaiting the banquet of the psychopathic killer fond of human flesh. **
Cleo, you ROCK!!!!
Now for a little more on the Hannibal sequel, Gary wrote in with some info from a Hopkins British TV appearance, which you can see in the remake and sequel section.

“Hopkins and Scott for Hannibal 3?”
"Hannibal" producer Dino De Laurentiis has revealed that director Ridley Scott and Anthony Hopkins are both up for a third "Hannibal" movie. But contrary to previous reports, De Laurentiis told journalists at the Berlin Film Festival that the new movie would not be based on Thomas Harris‘ "Red Dragon." That novel precedes "Silence of the Lambs" and "Hannibal", and
was previously filmed as "Manhunter" in 1986, with Brian Cox as the good doctor. When a film takes $58 million in the US on its opening weekend, there‘s always talk of a sequel, but in reality, both Hopkins and Scott are unlikely to commit without a very good script. And without Harris‘ involvement
or approval that‘s unlikely to emerge.
A good interview with Anthony Hopkins. This snippet is from Gary Oldman: The two men, known for their spooky characters, say they giggled a lot on the set. Oldman admits, "I've know him a long time. So it was great, we just had a good laugh, a lot of laughs on this picture. We did giggle. And I made myself giggle, just riding around in that wheelchair thing. Like you just suddenly go, this is ridiculous. You just suddenly step outside of yourself. And I would say, it's not too much for you, is it darling?"

Next up, a review from our reader Janette Y. in our reviews section. Thanks, Janette!
And now, the girl who never sleeps has scoured the web to bring you tons of news! I hand things over to the great cleolinda:
**Access Hollywood ran a piece about half an hour ago "unmasking" Gary Oldman... It reruns Thursday morning.
Hopkins in Paris: "In my opinion, Hannibal is the archetype of the hero, a dark hero, but still a hero. Clarice is also the model heroine of this new millenium : she takes things in hands, she faces a challenge : destroy Hannibal. In a way, he represents the male power, the male domination. She's a warrior; like Hannibal she has a mythical side. And it's probably because of her strength he loves her. In SILENCE OF THE LAMBS he threw her in a Labyrinth where she must face a Minotaure. If there's a third story, it will revolve around a double liberation : now that Hannibal revealed her to her dark side, she must not only set herself free from it but also she must free him from his condition." Great, new revealing interviews at Aint It Cool News! brought to you by Caltanet! You MUST read these!
*Hannibal opens in Germany Thursday. Cleo visited the German website:
The opening animation--the face coming forward out of the black--is freaky. "Die Akte Hannibal": Something similar to the Italian "riservata." *"Filmdaten": Info--production, plot, etc. "Besetzung"--cast, "Stab"--crew, "Inhalt"--story/plot. *"Szenenbilder": Media, gallery. A moving filmstrip of thumbnails. *Links: FBI, hannibalmovie.com, other new releases.
***A
short piece in the 2/26/01 issue of US Weekly, the "Hot Stuff"
section, called "Clothes Call":
"Julianne Moore has great delivery--and she picks up, too! While
filming 'Hannibal,' Moore wasn't pleased with the dress her character, Clarice Starling, wears in a dinner scene with Dr. Lecter. Moore asked New York designer Marc Bouwer to stitch up something. He did, but time was so tight that Moore actually picked up the backless black silk-jersey dress herself
from Bouwer's studio before flying to Virginia, where the scene was shot that same day."(That really was an astonishing dress.)
Lots more in the USWeekly--a 3*** review, a full-page picture from the premiere. (I need this -- Chris)
***The FBI is looking for Clarice Starlings! If you're female and looking to stop the terrible screaming of the lambs, click here!
Cleo also translated some Italian newspaper articles for us:
A Woman Faints, the Ambulance Arrives
Rome, 10 feb. (Adnkronos) - ' Hannibal' on the screen: here comes the
ambulance. It happened yesterday in Ostia, the opening day of Ridley
Scott’s
new film, 'liberated' from the commission of cinematographic review….
At the
multiplex Cineland, during the projection of 17 and 35, they had to
call an
ambulance: one spectator did not make it through the final scenes of
the
film, the ones involving Hannibal Lecter’s meal of brain, and got sick.
After some disturbance, the ambulance arrived and took her to the
hospital.
The woman recovered soon after, no harm done.
Head of “Antimostro” Unit: A Dangerous Fascination
Rome, 10 feb. - (Adnkronos) - A serial killer “much too brilliant and
rational to be real” and, above all, “rendered on the screen so as to
create
a dangerous fascination. An evil that, while it provokes repulsion,
risks
creating a certain attraction.” Hannibal Lecter does not fulfill the
requirements to to be a realistic serial killer in the expert eyes of
Carlo
Bui, director of the Violent Crimes Analysis Unit of the Department of
Public Emergency, that is, the “antimostro squad” of investigators
specializing in “hunting sociopaths” in Italy. “It’s undoubtedly a
beautiful
film, evocative, the images and the general context ‘gothic.’ Anthony
Hopkins, also, is exceptional. But you don’t have to be an expert” -
says
Bui to Adnkronos- “in order to see that a character like that couldn’t
exist
in everyday life.”
*Note: Antimostro, literally “anti-monster.” Remember “Il Mostro,” the other, real-life killer in Hannibal that didn’t make it from the book to the film.
*Standing ovation for Anthony Hopkins at "Hannibal"
premiere*
Berlin (dpa) - Moderate applause from the public greeted the film
«Hannibal»
last night at the Berlinale. However, leading actor Anthony Hopkins
received
standing ovations and calls of bravo before the film's start.
«Hannibal» is
the sequel to the Hollywood film «The Silence of the Lambs» and is
being
shown in the program out of competition."

Huge thanks to Tony'sGirl for keeping watch. The New York Post picked up an AP report about Anthony Hopkins' interview with Barbara Walters that will air tonight. Here it is:
HOPKINS: PLAYING HANNIBAL WAS EASY
NEW YORK (AP) . Playing Hannibal Lecter isn't such a stretch, Anthony Hopkins says.
Hopkins tells Barbara Walters in an interview on ABC's ''20/20'' he's a bit of a loner, like the villain of 1991's ``The Silence of the Lambs'' and the sequel ``Hannibal,'' which hits theaters Feb. 9.
``I like being on my own. I don't have any major friendships or relationships with people,'' he says in the interview, which airs at 10 p.m. EST Friday. ``But I keep to myself, very much to myself, so that makes it easy for me, to play these parts . not just Hannibal Lecter . but the parts like `Remains of the Day.' Men who are very self-contained, very sure of themselves, very quiet and remote.''
The 63-year-old Oscar winner says acting ``basically, is very easy.
``You see, actors ... I think they make a big deal of it. And we talk about it. And, you know, watch the `Actors Studio' every night. I have done that, as well. But I know that, uh, actors make a big deal about this acting game. And there is nothing to it.''
02/01/01 -- I am extremely grateful to anyone who writes in with information about Hannibal. I scour the net every morning but there are always things I miss and I have to extend huge thanks to scoopers like Tony'sGirl who writes in with the following:
"Keep your eye
for the People mag due out end of this week. I was
watching E! News Daily tonight. They were talking
about the big cover story on Celine Dion, but it looks
like the secondary cover photo in the upper right
corner is none other than of a smiling Sir Anthony --
I'd recognize that round face and short white hair
anywhere. If you ask me he should have been the main
story." Thanks, Tony'sGirl!!
And the great Arjan Welles, the maniac who took the 80 screenshots of the trailer, who located the first Hannibal soundtrack review, which you can find by going to Amazon UK, although if you're going to buy, check out Greater Good.com, which links to e-commerce sites but gives a little of what you were going to pay anyway to charity. It would make Hannibal proud!
Also, Laura Palmer has digitized all the latest TV appearances on Hannibal and has moved her site, so you can check that all out by clicking HERE (and if you haven't, you definitely should. Very cool site!
And lastly, a brand new review appeared today on the great Dark Horizons which actually originates at Home Theater.com. As will all of these net reviews, there are SPOILERS!!! Do not read if you don't want to know (I tend to skim over those paragraphs!)
01/31/01 -- Many enthusiastic thanks to the great scooper Tony'sGirl, who came up with another story, this one which has Tony himself going to Berlin "to attend the 51st annual Berlinale Film Festival starting next week ... Among the most prominent films will be the horror story ''Hannibal,'' the sequel to ``Silence of the Lambs.'' Lead actor Anthony Hopkins will come to Berlin to promote his role as a psychokiller, organizers said." Now would be a great time to be Berliner! Read the rest of the thing HERE!
Next up, we have a new review!!! A very tasty one at that from movieheadlines.net! Read it HERE! Thanks also to CHUD!
01/30/01 -- Anthony Hopkins did an interview with TV Guide, which the members of Yahoo's Loving Lecter Club excerpted. Here are some highlights:
TV Guide : "Would you play Lecter again?" (Ted Tally, who won an Oscar for his adaptation
of "The Silence of the Lambs" is writing a screenplay based on Thomas Harris's 1981
nove, "Red Dragon". That novel was turned into a 1986 film, "Manhunter", directed
by Michael Mann. Actor Brian Cox played Lecter.)
Anthony Hopkins : "Yeah, I'm going to do it. If I can only figure out how to lose
20 years." (He pulls his face back in a mock attempt at plastic surgery). "I could
put a stocking over my face for the camera."
TV Guide : "The end of "Hannibal" has to rank as one of the most outrageous ever
filmed for a big-studio production"
Anthony Hopkins : "We laughed all the way through it. I told Ridley [Scott, the director]
that it was so outrageous that the next stop for us will be porno movies."
TV Guide : "What were you thinking about when you were shooting the scene?"
Anthony Hopkins : "I never think about acting when I am acting. I'm thinking, 'Where
do I want to go to lunch?'"
Elsewhere on the net, Hopkins also spoke to Italy's La Republicca newspaper. Here are some excerpts, thanks to the great Delphi Anthony Hopkins Fan Forum:
from "La Repubblica" 29/01/01 (free translation)
[...]What do YOU like to do? "I love reading, going to the gym, walking, gardening, playing piano and writing music. I'm a quiet person, I read much and I' m more or less vegetarian."
Hannibal is an extreme character and you seem to like this kind of character. "He's bad. Someone compares him to Hitler. Iago is the greatest bad one. The evil is charming. They have no doubts, they're machines. Lecter, Iago, Faust, Mephistopheles or Richard III have no doubts and I think that a certain part of us would like secretely to be like them. There are people in the world that have no conscience or hearts. we don't like them but we're charmed. In everybody there is a dark side that can be dangerous. Men and society are violent. Man is a violent animal, cruel. We like to be scared. We like to stay in the far rows and watch."
...[about the final scenes...] "There were 2 or 3 different scenes... We were on the plane, on 20/05/00 and we filmed the two version included the shocking one."
...about Jodie Foster... "I don't know why she didn't join."
Here is a partial review from scooper Mathius!
"Hi, I recently had the privledge of seeing the first 10-15 min. of hannibal ... When i first heard julliane
moore would be playing clarice i must admit i was kinda skeptical, but after
seeing the first few scenes i must say she pulls it off BRILLIANTLY!!! I
choose not to watch the whole film cause i would rather have the experience
of seeing the whole production on the big screen but i just thought you would
be interested in knowing how fantastic the film appeared to be so far."
01/26/01 -- Thanks to the ever-vigilant Arjan Wells for pointing me to this story which says that Dino de Laurentiis has very high expectations for this movie and that it's the best movie he has ever worked on! Yow! In related news, thanks to Oscarwatch for letting us know that Dino himself will be the recipient of the coveted Irving Thalberg Award at this year's Oscar ceremony! Go Dino!
Also, check out this cool new links page!
01/24/01 -- Lots of news in today's update, kiddies! Firstly, Eon Magazine (which I'm loving more since they started their Hannibal blitz) caught up with Ridley Scott at the Broadcast Film Critics Association's Critics' Choice Awards. He spoke about the fun he had making this film and the existence of subtext (how rare for a director anyore!). Read the whole thing by clicking HERE
Since I have the Time Magazine that I scanned that amazing photo from but am too lazy to scan the whole article, here are the Anthony Hopkins Hannibal-related quotes (I nevertheless encourage everyone to read it since it is very well written by Jess Cagle either at the library or when Alena puts up her magazine archive). ENJOY!
Cagle: "Dr. Hannibal Lecter still inhabits our nightmares because Hopkins knows that as an actor, 'the quieter you are, the more terrifying it is.'"

Thanks to Tony'sGirl for this cool tidbit:
If people go to AOL and click
on Entertainment, there is a story called "Cannibal
Run", click it; then when the "Hannibal" box pops up
click on where it says "tickets, video, sounds" (or
something like that). There are three messages from
Anthony Hopkins (doing Dr. Lecter) that you can
download. One is for a Welcome, when you log on
(Clarice, is that you?), Mail (You've Got Mail -- Goody
Goody) and a Goodbye (Bye-sy, bye-sy, see ya round). I can't believe they
got him to do it. It's hysterical. This man is a
genius.
**On Regis, Anthony Hopkins elaborated on his idea for "a sequel" that is sounding less and less like Red Dragon by the day. He wouldn't say too much--only that he's got this idea that Clarice should finally have to "zap" Lecter--and that he [Lecter] would want her to do it. Julianne Moore will be on the show Monday. Alena thinks she will also
be on Rosie that day, due to a screw-up [on the show] this week.
"Feline Good"
**Dark Horizons refutes the Mr. Showbiz "Aussies
fuming" article, saying that it's more like arguing between R and NC-17 than PG and R.

02/02/01 -- Two more reviews have popped on Aint It Cool News!
Cagle: "Critics bruised the novel pretty badly, but Hopkins got a kick out of it: 'I thought it was way over the top but interesting.'"
Cagle: "As for Hannibal, Hopkins decided that the years of freedom had loosened the old boy up a bit. He now punctuates Hannibal's low-slung, threatening sentences with 'okey-dokey' and 'goody goody.' 'Did you like those?' asks Hopkins. 'I added those.'"
The article also addresses the new Red Dragon films.
