Many still consider them bubblegum pop, but those people haven't really taken a close enough look. Look for these guys to be around for the long term. Tastes change but talent tends to survive.
~"Brothers Turn Up the Heat", by Craig McKee for WestSide, Motreal, Canada, September 27, 2000

"I don't think people really understand what the band is about-the passion and love for rock and roll that we have. I think if you see us live you'll begin to understand where we're coming from."
~Isaac, "Hanson, In For the Long Run", by Craig McKee for WestSide, Motreal, Canada, September 27, 2000

"To be honest, I'm not really all that interested in flashiness. I just want to be one of those guys who just does a solid job of keeping it funky, who just sits back there and keeps the beats steady and fat. Those guys are underrated."
~Zac, Fort Wayne Journal Gazette, October 8, 2000

Could there be another Hanson group coming along before too long?
"I think it's different with every person," says Isaac. "Don't think just because we were musically talented, they would be, too. They naturally love music, though. You kind of can't help but love music if you're in our family."

"It's not particularly anything against boy bands, but that is not a title we particularly embrace. We're really a band-we just happen to be boys-or young men I should say."
~Isaac, "Hanson, In For the Long Run", by Craig McKee for WestSide, Motreal, Canada, September 27, 2000

GL: What do you strive for in your life-success, love, power, excitement, knowledge, or money?
Zac: Definitely love or knowledge, by far. Everything else is superficial.
~Girl's Life magazine

"I was amazed by them, watching them play and sing," he continues. "You always got the sense that they were actually talented but they really have that brothers thing. They have a sixth sense when they play together."
~Matthew Sweet, "Hanson, Sweet Go Underneath", Yahoo News, April 2001

"It's always difficult to explain your own music, much less music that you have yet to record," says Isaac. "On the one hand, I would say it might be a little more rock 'n' roll, but on the other hand, I would say it might be a little more soul. I don't know what to say, except for that it's me. It'll always be Hanson, and I think there will always be distinguishing characteristics to that."

"The internet-you look at the great things you can do. You can connect with your fans immediatley. You can talk to them directly about things they like about your record. It's great for communication with your fans.
Now, obviously with such an amazing tool and so much freedom, there are downsides, huge downsides. When someone goes and downloads a record and never buys it, it hurts the band when they don't buy the record. There's a large majority of people who don't quite realize that they need to support the bands that they love, that they want to download the records of. They need to go buy the record, go to their concerts, whatever it is to keep the band going. 'Cause if you don't, then eventually they won't be around. The band will have to stop and go do something else."
~Zac, Globo News, Brazil, November 2000

Internally anyway, the trio proves itself as stable. There is not a sign of brother fights. Isaac seems to be relaxed in the role of the oldest one, he often explains simple facts with quite a lot of details, which causes Taylor to interrupt him. Taylor is the most eloquent one, he tends to monopolize the conversation most of the time and speaks fast and cleverly. Zac keeps quiet. Under pressure, and when the opportunity presents itself, he always manages to explain contents with spontaneous theatrical performances, accompanied by some partly weird orally generated noises.
~Musik Express Sounds, May 2000

Isaac tells sadly and with an amazing knowledge about the 50s and 60s: "At that time, record companies still employed real music lovers. But today, someone in a suit comes and tells me that I'm not 'Hanson' enough." At this moment, Zac intervenes: "Who isn't Hanson enough? Am I not myself? Let me think a little bit about this."
~ Musik Express Sounds, May 2000

This time around, Hanson is rocking with a sense of where the music, rather than the hype, can take them.

Happy birthday, TH! From TLS and TC

"I want to be branded the buff, tall, handsome one," cracks the still-skinny Isaac.
~ Teen People, May 2000

"There was some divine reason for us to get that music. It wasn't like our parents were hippies," said Taylor. "They had the records, and we picked them up. Our parents were both musical, but really we were just driven. There was some innate musicality between the three of us."
~ Go-Erie.com, October 12, 2000

~Thanks to Marica for putting together today's cool HAD. This is from an appearance on UK's TFI Friday on Channel 4, April 2000.

When asked, "Where do you get your clothes?" Taylor replied, "A lot of the time, it's just thrift-store stuff."
Isaac said, "It's anything from designer stuff . . . "
To which Taylor added, "To the most vintage."

"If this is a free country, why doesn't everybody live in Tulsa?"
~Danny Goble, PHD at University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma Today, July/August 2001
We must say, we totally agree with the man on *that*!

Brother, can you spare a ridiculously catchy pop hook? Sure, and while you're at it, have a dollop of hip-hop grooviness, a dash of soul, some sparkling harmonies and loads of youthful exuberance. But wait, there's more. Add three photogenic teens who actually write their songs, play their instruments and look like they're genuinely having a ton o' fun doing it. Maybe one day, they'll bottle whatever these three fresh-faced Oklahoman brothers ate as babies. Until then, we've got Hanson, our favorite sibling purveyors of sunshine pop since the Partridge Family, and they're back with This Time Around.
~Get Music, June 27, 2000

In the end, the marriage of charismatic youth and infectious melodies is pure pop fun, and the brothers Hanson exude it from the tips of their blonde hair to the bottom of their beat-stomping feet.
~Get Music, June 27, 2001

Taylor: Then it takes ages to put an album together in the studio.
Zac: And it's also a good thing to get out of people's minds for a while.
Isaac: We were so in people's faces.
Zac: I think it was a good thing to go away and not be in people's minds so that when you can come back...
Taylor: ...you've had a mental break and we've been able to grow and change and evolve and let people look at you in a perspective that they didn't before.
~ TeenCelebrity, April,2001

“Actually,” Zac counters, "If we did fight, we all know I'd be the only one left standing."
~Teen People, May 2000

"The fact is, this album is impossible to critique, because it's perfect," wrote Spin critic Max Finneran in May. "Like a Hollywood soundtrack that will make your pre-programmed, culturally imprisoned synapses twitch, shiver, and weep despite your hatred of Julia Roberts, Hanson's new album sounds great, reached for the heart and comes back with its hands bloody everytime."
~Daily Oklahoman, July 27, 2000

"You know, It's like, I don't have to have some particulary gruff voice, or you know, be anything but just a pop band and somebody should hopefully be able to kind of say, okay, well they write good songs and I appreciate that. But most of the time its really, really hard. Because especially in the pop genre, you're always kind of defending yourself. It's like... No really, I am a musician!, I really do do this. Yeah, this really does come out of me. I just sit around and I play music and this is what comes and this is what I feel and it doesn't make any more or less authentic necessarily, so.. you know."
~Isaac, Getmusic.com, Feb. 2001

Ask them to sum up the past year in a nutshell, for instance.
Zachary: "I personally don't think you can fit in one nutshell."
Isaac: "Depends on the nut."
Zachary: "Maybe one of those jumbo walnuts."
Taylor: "If you got a big peanut with two compartments, maybe you could squeeze some in both sides. Yes, we've had an amazingly hectic and awesome year. It's just impossible to explain in one sentence."
~USA Today, February 25, 1998

What qualities make a girl cool?
Z: She needs to be absolutely perfect. (laughs)
I: No, I don't think there's any one qaulity that makes a girl cool. You know, you find yourself meeting all kinds of different people, but until you finally find that girl, and go whoa, she's it. I don't think you can really pinpoint it. You never know until you meet a girl. Hopefully, it's more than just being physically attracted to her. It's not like I'm instantly into someone because she looks like Cindy Crawford.
T: Looks may be initial reason you're attracted to someone, but after that, it becomes more about the kind of person she is.
~Jump magazine, June/July, 2000

"The difference is relative. I would have to say the Japanese, and the other Asian fans, are a little more giddy about (their fanhood.) They jump up and down. They're more excited that way," he says. "And the Indonesians are absolutely insane. They're just no-holds barred."
Not that he minds.
"You think 'Woah, this is an incredibly unusual experience,' not that it doesn't affect you in a weird way, but it's really, really cool, amazing, that someone is that enthusiastic about the band and the music," Isaac says. "It really is a cool experience, something I hope we get the opportunity to cultivate."

drDrew.com: What are the pros and cons of being a young celebrity?
Zac Hanson: The pro is that when I'm 25, I'll be an elder in music. The con is getting looked down on because you're the young kid doing music. You don't get enough respect in some situations. You work that out by just playing music and saying, "I don't care what these people think. If they don't like the music then I don't want to hear about it."
~"Hanson: The All American Boys", by Jennifer Maerz for drDrew.com.

Remarkably, several of Hanson's songs had the funky, club-worn patina of a band twice their age.

Hey Isaac! :) I was wondering if you've learned any new instruments besides guitar and piano?
"I've always dabbled in the drums. But I am a guitarist not a drummer, so I would refrain from saying that I actually play the drums. You wouldn't want me as your drummer in your band!"
~Isaac, Yahoo! Chat, December 22, 2000
Thanks to Joanna for sending in this great collage of Isaac! :o)

"I would actually like to see a Hanson concert, cause I would actually like to see how skeptical I am of us."
~Zac, "Reviewer Analyzes Definition of 'Boy Band' to Discover Hanson's New Image", by Debra Halpern, The Tartan, October 2, 2000

The Hanson boys cranked out a serious set of music for nearly 2½ hours and their self-composed songs, competent musicianship, forthright delivery and lack of pretension -- no makeup, no costume changes, no special effects or pyrotechnics or those awful flying surfboards that the Backstreet Boys use showed what mediocre sugar-coated poseurs all those merely telegenic boy bands really are.
