Charlie the Caiman's Page
Spectacled Caimans seem like good pets when they are small - Charlie is two years old. But they grow to be 4 to 8 feet...so please don't choose one unless you can house them into adulthood! :)
Caiman are aggressive and can turn the front of their bodies 180 degrees - they are powerful and muscular. Only the most experienced herpetoculturists and institutions should consider keeping these magnificent animals!
Youngsters feel safest mostly submerged in water. Water filtration and regular cleaning are essential to their health. They must also have a place to bask.
Caimans require a land and water set-up which must increase in size as the animal does. They eat insects, amphibians, fish, birds and mammals.
Charlie's story is a repeat story that plays out for many of these Crocodilians. A son bought it as a "cool pet" two years ago when Charlie was a small hatchling. The son has left home for college and left Charlie with non-reptile, older parents. Fortunately for Charlie these good folks sought us out to see if we could help. Luckily too, we have a close friend who had been seeking a nice specimen for him and his family. Jim Reynolds, his wife and herp-loving daughter have offered to give Charlie a proper, loving and permanent home! We enjoyed having him here with us for a week and relished the experience to work with this little Caiman! Charlie was handled daily and is not quite as mean and powerful as he thinks he is, he will however demand respect as an adult. We are grateful to Jim, June and Rhiannon ... we KNOW Charlie will live happily with them and receive the best of care...our biggest thanks go to them!!

*****Please think before you fall for that baby at the pet store....thank you!
