Croc 2

The adventures of Croc began many years ago when his parents somehow mislaid him and he was rescued and adopted by a tribe of friendly Gobbos. Rufus, the king of the Gobbos, takes him in as his own and teaches him the Gobbo ways but then, one day, Baron Dante arrives in town…. The Baron was an evil magician who, together with his followers, the Dantinis, captured all the Gobbos and imprisoned them. Through a series of adventures Croc eventually found and rescued all the captives and defeated the Baron and, for a while everything returned to normal. In his second adventure, CROC 2, a bottle is washed up on the beach and inside there is a message about a missing Croc baby. Our hero must discover if he is that baby and so embarks a long and perilous journey. This in itself would be difficult enough but, to make matters worse, the Dantinis have magically resurrected his archenemy Baron Dante so Croc must put all his expertise to good use if he wants to win through. Although this may appear little more than a 3D adventure-platformer it’s actually quite a difficult title to complete. In the early stages you get plenty of chances to explore Croc’s moves and attacks but, as the game progresses, players will need to be quite proficient. Unlike his real life counterparts Croc can run, jump and climb walls and he has a wicked tail attack to defend himself with. He can also perform a super-stomp where he jumps and then comes crashing down with extra force – ideal for crushing crates to find out what’s inside. Any normal croc would be more than happy with those attributes but our green hero has even more up his sleeve. He is able to push objects, pick up and throw things, swing on vines and monkey bars, perform triple jumps and use a variety of transportation such as mine carts, hang-gliders and hot air balloons so he’s actually pretty unique. Like most games in this genre the gameplay is mainly about navigating a series of hazards and collecting stuff along the way. In CROC 2 they take the form of crystals and there are 100 to find on each of the 40+ levels. These are spread around 4 themed worlds, each inhabited by a different tribe of Gobbos – the Sailors, Cossacks, Prehistoric and the Inca tribes. There are also some secret areas to discover, one in each of the Gobbo villages but to unlock these areas players must first locate special coloured crystals and find golden statues so it’s not straightforwardly simple by any means. Pits filled with spikes and pools of bubbling lava are just a couple of the inhospitable obstacles he’ll have to navigate through and with lots of nasty Dantinis, monsters and level bosses to defeat these tasks are made more difficult. Fortunately, his crystal collection can be exchanged for extra health, lives and power-ups but even with all these enhancements he’s still got a tough job on his hands.
