Disney's Dinosaur

A massive meteor strike brought about the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago but UBI Soft are determined it’s not going to happen again. That’s why they’ve allowed players to help guide a small band of prehistoric creatures through many perils in a fight for survival. Obviously, saving an entire species is too big a task for a single creature to tackle so the controllable characters in DISNEY’S DINOSAUR number three, each with special abilities and attributes that will get them through many sticky situations. It begins with Fila, the Pterandon (a flying dino). As she soars above the ancient landscape she discovers an egg that is being threatened by carnivores but, by using her ability to swoop and dive, she manages to scare them off long enough to save the egg and transport it to a new location. Soon it hatches, revealing the second of our trio, Aladar the Iguanodon. Still a baby Aladar needs nourishing food but Fila is unable to get to the fruit in the trees with which to feed him. Fortunately, along comes Zini, a nimble Lemur, who, quite willingly, nips off and gathers all that Aladar needs, helping him to grow at an alarming rate. Between them these three can achieve some remarkable feats. Zini can jump, climb and throw objects: Fila can scout out the area, swoop down to attack or pick up items that can be dropped onto dangerous creatures, and the massive Aladar can smash things with his huge tail. On their own they wouldn’t stand much of a chance but players can combine these skills in deadly situations in order to gain points and save their friends from a burning planet. The game follows the plotline of the movie and takes you through 14 missions of action and strategy including saving an egg from raptors, escaping a deadly meteorite shower, rescuing baby dinosaurs and finding water for the herd. These missions take place across four types of environment – desert, mountain, drained lake and cave – plus you get to experience around a dozen 3D prehistoric landscapes and a good variety of dino’s too. Each encounter will increase the hero’s point’s score, making them more skilful and much tougher as the game progresses. Also, each new species of dinosaur that is defeated in battle is added to a chronologically correct Dino- encyclopaedia that can be viewed separately. This catalogue of critters shows an animated representation of the animals in the game as well as giving a brief description of their habits. A simple button-press cycles through each of the three heroes allowing players to guide and control them individually in order to achieve specific goals but another button groups them all together. This makes it very simple to get all three at a particular location at the same time rather than taking them one by one. Aimed at players 8-years and over gameplay is obviously quite easy to master but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the game is easy to beat. A lot of thought needs to go into how to tackle certain adversaries or overcome particular obstacles and this gives the game plenty of playability.
