Dukes Of Hazzard

THE DUKES OF HAZZARD was a popular 80’s television series and, in fact, it is still shown regularly in the ‘states. Over on this side of the pond unless you are over 30 you may not remember it at all. Nevertheless, the series did contain plenty of entertaining moments that have now found their way into a computer game for Playstation and PC. Subtitled ‘Racing For Home’ the game mainly involves a whole heap of dashing around country roads while usually attempting to escape from the police. Not that the two heroes, Bo and Luke, are bad guys, far from it. It’s just they always seemed to be prime suspects whenever anything went wrong in Hazzard County and spent most of their time hunting down the real culprits to clear their name. One thing that they had in their favour was a pretty fast car, the General Lee, and, as you might expect, the game is all about drivin’ fast and hard. This isn’t a driving game in the traditional sense in that it follows the plotline from an episode of the series. The story moves through 27 mission- based levels wound around a bank robbery for which Bo and Luke are wrongfully accused. Solving their dilemma means lots of foot-down screaming around the roads of Hazzard County in pursuit of the real felons so there are car chases galore to contend with and not just in the General Lee. Players get the chance to drive the cars of other key characters from the series such as, Daisy's Jeep, Boss Hogg's Cadillac, and Cooter's tow truck in the single-player game and even more are opened up in multiplayer mode. Sometimes the mission objectives are to ram another car off the road or avoid being shoved into a ditch by the chasing cop car. In other missions you may be on a deadline to make a delivery or attempting to rescue Daisy from kidnappers in which case your efforts will be against the clock. Even taking a wrong turning can result in mission failure so you’ll need to listen to you co-driver, Luke, who manages to point you in the right direction without ever ending a word in ‘G’, quite difficult when you’re talkin’ about drivin’, turnin’ and stopin’. In fact I think the only thing he says ending in 'G' is "Dang it, Bo". This ‘hick-speak’ isn’t at all annoyin’ though and after a while you’ll just blank it out. In any case you are usually too busy leaping ramps, jumping over swollen rivers, avoiding oncoming cars and trucks and trying to drive through the power-ups that are scattered by the wayside. These could be repair kits, bonus time, nitro boosts, or offensive weapons such as oil slicks, glue or even sticks of dynamite. As I mentioned earlier, this is a different type of racing game but one that’s really a lot of fun to play. .
