Colony Wars - Red Sun

If it’s possible to reach new heights in space then COLONY WARS – RED SUN is certainly battering at the boundaries. Impressive visuals introduce this space shooter and a high standard of graphics is continued throughout the many levels of futuristic combat. This lends a higher degree of playability to an already playable title and immerses gamers in realistic scenarios and tense situations. Players assume the role of Alexander Valdermar, a sort of do- gooder mercenary, and begin their adventure in the far frontiers of space set in the 5th millennium. The intro-sequence explains that Alex was a miner with strange and terrifying dreams – dreams that cause him to leave his mundane job and seek adventure by discovering the true, more sinister nature of a diplomatic ship, the Red Sun. As he leaps from system to system he appears always to be in the thick of some kind of conflict or other but, lacking allegiance to any of the warring factions, he is free to accept ‘freelance commissions’ in order to fund his quest. There are more than 50 multiple objective missions to be completed but you can accept or reject these and so plot your own path through the game. Each has it’s own fee for successful completion and the money you earn can be used to purchase the many upgrades available. Around 30 different weapons can be brought into play and 9 new and improved spacecraft are available as you progress through 5 unique solar systems in pursuit of the Red Sun. Obviously, to be able to reap your rewards and improve your chances by upgrading you’ll first have to survive your missions. Training is on hand but mastery of the controls and weapons systems is very easy to achieve. On-screen radar pinpoints enemy craft, both land and space based, but how you take them out is up to you. An unfolding plotline gradually reveals the true nature of the Red Sun so make sure you have ample resources and enough experience to face the final showdown in this battle to save mankind.
