A hard2hate2000 Extensive Game Review

The World is Not Enough

We here at hard2hate2000 have somthing of a problem
with acronyms. Well, some acronyms anyway, because we'll
let some of the more traditional examples, like RAC or
the AA go. Indeed, any breakdown recovery service of
letters that actually for words is fine by us.

But when a top dollar film and game like The World Is Not
Enough wants to shorten itself down to somthing like
TWINE, we really get wound right up, because TWINE makes
it sound like a load of old balls, and that simply
doesn't do this game justice.

GOLDENEYE SEE

As soon as any James Bond game pokes its well-groomed head on the scene, comparisons are always made with the king of all Bondage, GoldenEye on the N64. Unfortunately for us, the last Bond appearance on the Playstation, Tomorrow Never Dies, was somthing of a duff job, so imagine how relived we were when we realised that The World Is Not Enough is a first-person shooter all the way through, just like the N64 classic. And while this game isn't going to put a bullet through the head of its Nintendo cousin, it is certainly worthy of its 00 agent status. The missions themselves are structured along exactly the same lines as the film, so it'll help if you've seen it a couple of times. However, a knowledge of the film isn't compulsory, thanks to the super-clear mission briefing and cut scenes from the movie that greet you every time you finish a level. Indeed, the whole game has a certain polished and smooth style wothy of James himself. And you're going to love seeing that Renard's plans for the world domination don't succeed. Even when your not killing enemies, you're walking about in disguise or using some of the many gadgets that are available to you - grapple watch or night goggles anyone?

FINE SPARKLING TWINE

For all it's undoubted brilliance, though (and let's be clear - this is a very, very good game), unlike James himself, this isn't without its flaws. First off there's no multiplayer mode, and altough we accept that the simgle-player missions wouldn't have been so big if there was, you can't help feeling a bit sad that your mates can only sit and watch. Another small letdown is the intelligence of your opponents. Some are very clever and will shoot hostages as soon as they sniff that there's an intruder in the building, but others will walk around like zombies until you put them out of thier misery. These two problems also help to contribute to the game's main pitfall - that it's a touch too easy to get through the levels. Even the addition of a 00 Agent difficulty and cheats to unlock, doesn't add loads to this otherwise brilliant shooter. But if you can forgive the flaws (and we can) you'll be in 00 heaven. And we Playstation owners have waited a long time to say that.
