CIVIL WAR SERVICE OF
STOKE W. OAKLEY
This page is currently under construction. However, let me share with you some interesting facts that I have found on my great grandfather, S. W. Oakley.
He served in the 51st Regiment, Co. B Infantry of the Tennessee Army (Confederate States of America). According to his application for pension in 1905 he was discharged after having served in the battles at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson in Tennessee. For more information on these battles, please go to Tennessee Battles. He contracted a lung problem while serving in the war, but was declined his pension by the state of Tennessee.
In a letter that he wrote in 1905, while trying to make application for his pension he states the following:
"...I was captured soon after I went in the Army. I was at Fort Henry and in a few days Grant moved on us at Fort Donelson. Then I was taken prisoner and was carried to Camp Duglas. Stayed about 10 months and was exchanged at ?. When the general exchange was made..."
Fortunately, I have found an eye-witness account of the battle of Ft. Donelson and imprisonment at Camp Douglas (located in Chicago Illinois). Thanks to the author, M. A. Ryan.
If anyone has any other information to add to this, please contact me through email at hargisfamily@hotmail.com
Thanks!
