People Exchange Greetings And Visits To Mark New Year In
Ambon
Ambon ( Berita ) : Residents in Ambon city and its surroundings, Maluku
province, have exchanged greetings in public places and visited one another
to mark New Year.
Antara correspondent here reported on Sunday evening that they celebrated New Year
cheerfully and asked one another for forgiveness for their mistakes and wrongdoings
they had made in 2005. Groups of children looked dominant and they usually visited
their neighbours. Adults sometimes gave them money as they did during Iedul Fithri
or Christmas. "I have collected Rp40 thousand from this activity," Michael, 10, said.
New Year 2006 celebrations were different from the previous years. Moslems and
Christians alike mingled especially in Merdeka field on Jalan AY Patty. The
celebration of New Year run peacefully and the people have no more fear because the
security situation in Ambon has returned to normal after the end of the communal
conflict which broke out on January 19, 1999. However, police personnel were still on
guard at a number of roads and posts but their number had decreased. (ant)
