Minister: Religious conflicts caused by unadequate practice of
religious tenets
Ambon ( Berita ) : Religious Affairs Minister Muh. Maftuh Basyuni affirmed that the
many religious frictions and conflicts going on in some regions in Indonesia in the
past few years were caused by poor understanding and inadequate practice of
religious tenets by their believers in their daily life.
"Poor understanding and practice of religious tenets in the life of the community are
believed to be the causes," the minister said when opening the 35th synode of Maluku
Protentant Churches in Ambon on Sunday.
Poor practice and understanding of religious tenets were manifested in bad behaviour
and actions such as drug abuse, corruption, immoral action or other such action in
defiance of religious values.
Besides, religious services are still far from satisfactory in addition to inability to
manifest a harmonious community life and consequently this condition caused social
imbalance which often resulted in internal conflicts among communities of different
beliefs.
According to him, a number of social conflicts and riots which hit some regions in
Indonesia in the past few years happened in Poso (Central Sulawesi), North Maluku,
Maluku, Mamasa (West Sulawesi) and bombing attacks which were intentionally
committed by irresponsible groups in an inhuman way.
"These incidents give a signal that the Indonesian nation is facing a threat of
disintegration which requires our awareness and contribution in dealing with it," he
said. (ant)
