Bomb suspects face nine years in jail
YOGYAKARTA: Prosecutors requested on Tuesday that a court here sentence three
men to nine years on charges of a bombing outside the Yogyakarta office of Bank
Indonesia on New Year's Eve in 2000.
They told the Yogyakarta District Court that the defendants -- Wahyu Diarto alias
Syaifulah, 45, Muhamad Auwal Suhardi, 42, and Taufikqurrahman, 41 -- were guilty of
causing the bomb blast on Jan. 1, 2000, which resulted in a pedicab driver having his
right leg amputated.
The men had planted the bomb a day earlier before it exploded in front of the
Yogyakarta office of the central bank adjacent to the local post office, the prosecution
alleged.
They also indicted the defendants of planning a bomb attack on Jan. 22, 2000, inside
the Kauman grand mosque, Yogyakarta. The bomb failed to fully go off and only
burned a carpet in the mosque.
Presiding judge Widodo adjourned the tightly-guarded trial until next week to hear
defense pleas. --Antara
