Three alleged pro-Indonesia militiamen shot dead in clash near
border
DILI, East Timor (AP): Three pro-Indonesia militiamen were fatally shot Friday as they
tried to infiltrate into East Timor, a senior police official said.
The three were among seven armed militiamen who wereintercepted as they tried to
cross the border near Tunubibi village in Maliana district. They were shot dead in a
gunbattle with authorities, said Col. Paulo de Fatima Martins, commander of the East
Timor police.
He identified one of the slain militiamen as former militia leader Jose Mausorti, who
allegedly has infiltrated several times into Cailaco, a subdistrict in Maliana to meet his
wife and children.
Martins said East Timor border police were still hunting for the other four militiamen.
No official from Indonesia's west Timor region were available for comment. (**)
