Bomb blast kills six in Central Sulawesi
PALU, Central Sulawesi (JP): At least six people were killed when a bomb exploded
outside a house that was selling pork meat to Christians on Saturday morning.
Police said 43 others were injured by the blast that occured in Mahesa in the
southern part of the town.
Many of the victims were lining up to buy pork from the adjacent kiosk, according to
witnesses.
"This is a deliberate act to disrupt the New Year celebrations," Brig. Gen. Oegroseno,
Central Sulawesi Police Chief, said at the blast scene.
He refused to identify the perpetrators pending further investigations.
The night before, representatives of all religious communities in the province gathered
in nearby Donggala to renew their commitment to build peaceful coexistence.
Central Sulawesi has been the center of bloody conflicts between Christians and
Muslims in recent years.
The blast occured in spite of the massive deployment of security forces since
Christmas and into the New Year.
