Casualties of the October 1 Bali Bombings
Roy Tupai
The 23 victims of the October 1 triple suicide bombings at crowded restaurants in Bali
included Muslims, Hindus and Christians, ranging in age from 6 to 71. Most of the
innocent victims were women.
The death toll comprised 18 Indonesians, including three suicide bombers yet to be
formally identified; four Australians; and one Japanese. Some reports said one Briton
was also among the dead. That's because one of the Australian victims was born in
Britain and holds dual citizenship.
At least 148 people were injured: 100 Indonesians, 29 Australians, seven South
Koreans, four Japanese, four Americans, three Germans and one French citizen.
The carnage was fairly evenly spread between two open-air seafood restaurants at
Jimbaran Beach and a restaurant in Kuta. Nine people were killed at Nyoman Cafe,
eight killed at Menega Cafe and five killed at Raja's Bar and Restaurant.
Among the Indonesians killed were five female staff of the Jakarta office of the China
International Freight (CIF) company. PT CIF Transportasi Indonesia had taken 36 of its
employees on a holiday to Bali. After traveling by bus from Jakarta to Surabaya on
September 30, the group then took a ferry to Bali. The following night, 26 of them
decided to have dinner at the candlelit Menega Cafe.
According to a statement by the Culture and Tourism Ministry, the total number of
fatalities reached 27, although this was apparently due to cases of double-counting of
the victims. The Ministry has established a Media Center to provide information on the
attacks.
