Terrorists Planning Kidnappings: BIN

The State Intelligence Agency (BIN) says there are indications that terrorists are
planning to kidnap Indonesian and foreign officials, apparently shifting away from their
usual tactic of suicide bombings.
"They have a plan to change the target, for instance, kidnapping certain figures,
especially influential ones. It could be foreigners or our officials," BIN chief Syamsir
Siregar said Tuesday (20/12/05).
He declined to give further details of the possible targets, but said BIN and security
agencies had increased their vigilance to prevent possible terrorist actions during
Christmas and New Year.
"We know that they were planning and of course we have to stay alert to it. Hopefully,
with security personnel increase alertness, their space will be narrow and they will
think 100 times to execute their plans," he was quoted as saying by the Associated
Press.
Siregar and police had earlier warned that members of recently slain terrorist leader
Azahari Husin were planning bombings over the upcoming festive period.
Azahari was a member of regional terrorism network Jemaah Islamiyah, which has
carried out four major bomb attacks since October 2002, killing more than 240 people.
Police have said they are confident of capturing the remaining terrorists, who they
claim are running low on funds.
The National Police's anti-terror chief, Brigadier General Bekto Suprapto, was
reluctant to comment on BIN's latest warning, merely saying: "Ask Mr Syamsir about
it. He's the one who said it."
