Aerospace Show 2002 - Naval Air Station, Point Mugu

The 3-day 38th annual air show at Naval Air Station, Point Mugu was held from April 19-21, 2002. The Airforce Flight Demonstration Squardon "The Thunderbirds" highlighted this year's airshow. An unfortunate accident occured on the second day of the airshow when a Navy fighter (QF-4) crashed while performing in front of the 25,000 spectators. Both the pilots of the ill-fated jet perished in the crash.

The unfortunate accident ...

On the second day of the airshow, a low-flying QF-4 Phantom II fighter jet crashed in an area bordering the Point Mugu Naval Air Weapons station, killing its two crew members. The dead crew members were identified as Navy Commander Michael Norman, 39, who piloted the downed aircraft, and Marines Captain Andrew Muhs, 31, a radar intercept officer. The following two pictures captured the last moments of the aircraft.
