The Air and Space Smithsonian Magazine Article
The January 2003 edition of the Air and Space Smithsonian magazine features a 2-page article on HARP'S PBY-5A Catalina. The article gives a brief history on the important role the plane played in World War II, and how the plane is being restored at Hangar B by HARP members. Also, the article interviews one of the HARP members about his personal experiences as a crew member of a PBY-5A Catalina during WWII.
Naval Air Ferry Command Plaque Dedication
On December 7th, 2002 Congressman Anthony D. Weiner unveiled a large bronze plaque in the west lobby of the Ryan Visitor Center (control tower/administration building) Floyd Bennett Field. The plaque is dedicated to the World War II pilots of the Floyd Bennett-based Naval Air Ferry Command, and in particular, pilots who lost their lives while on duty (whose names are engraved on the plaque). HARP volunteer Jim Burke, who was a young marine on duty at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 was also honored at the ceremony.
Donation of UH-1H Helicopter to Westchester Medical Center
On October 3rd, 2002 members of H.A.R.P. donated a UH-1H Huey Helicopter to the Maria Fareri Children's Hospital. The Children's Hospital is currently being built and will be part of the Westchester Medical Center. The members of H.A.R.P. have worked approximately 2 years in restoring the helicopter and making it safe for the enjoyment of the terminall ill children.
Normandy Medal of Liberty Award Ceremony
On May 27, 2002 the members of HARP hosted a ceremony awarding 71 Veterans the Normandy Medal of Liberty. The medals are awarded from the French Government to the Veterans (including members of H.A.R.P.) for their brave actions in the battle of Normandy and the final liberation of France from German forces.
