He no doubt  moved with his  parents  when their next  child was born Loch, the next at Boort in 1899, and 1901 at Donald and by 1905 at Loch, in Gippsland where the family stayed until 1915.  During this time at Loch he learnt  to be a compositor for his father's Loch Express. He would then have moved to Mildura and helped his father set up some more papers.

During the 1914 war he enlisted in the 29th Battalion of the 8th Division and was wounded at Poziers, France and returned home where he served at Horseferry Road [ what was  that ?] until peace time. His fiancee Miss Carrie Bateman, born Melbourne, married him at Essendon  in an Anglican  church, Melbourne 1919.
