Born County Down, Ireland and "from the time he left school until he was 24 he assisted his parents farming. In 1854 he came to Melbourne and worked a various jobs for two and half years . He farmed in the Kyneton district for some years with much success and went into business at Woodend as a general commission agent  and auctioneer; while in the latter place he was appointed justice of the peace.
"Eventually misfortune  befell him and he lost his all. He returned to Melbourne and was variously occupied fro four years and at last took a situation wit h Mr. J. T Molloy produce merchant at 120 Queens Street remaining there 2 years.
"He next started railway contracting but after 2 years returned to his former situation with Mr Molloy who died in 1886. Mr Muntz bought the business from the executors and is now carrying on a large trade in hay, corn and general produce, trading as Hugh Muntz and Co." [The Co. were his sons and others.]  from "The Metropolis: its providers and distributors." 1887.
Hugh Muntz died 1 December 1888 at Gipps Street Collingwood, Melbourne aged 59 years of "Hydatid Cyst of the liver and Bronchitis" buried by a Wesleyan Minister at Kew, Boroondara Cemetery, Melbourne. Plot number Wesleyan  531-3.


Hugh's  sons W.H., G.W., J.E., & A.T (in photo below c 1930) Muntz carried on his business for a few years until the financial crisis in Victoria in 1892 drove them to Far North Queensland wher they formed a company "Muntz Bros". Hugh's  widow and all the adult children went to live in Queensland. In 1896  they began  farming sugar at "Bie Brie" Mossman, far north Queensland.

When Hugh married in  1858 at Woodend,  to Annie Evans who was  widowed since 1856  daughter of Thoms Dunstan and Jane Rowe born Cornwall, England, with 2 children. Hugh was a farmer at Woodend 1860-1868. He was a coucillor in 1862, 1866-67 a a local magistrate.
