BELL, GEORGE
Rank and organization: Captain of the Afterguard, U.S. Navy. Born: 12 March 1839, England. Accredited to: New York. G.O. No.: 17, 10 July 1863. Citation: Served as pilot of the U.S.S. Santee when that vessel was engaged in cutting out the rebel armed schooner Royal Yacht from Galveston Bay, 7 November 1861, and evinced more coolness, in passing the 4 forts and the rebel steamer General Rusk, than was ever before witnessed by his commanding officer. "Although severely wounded in the encounter, he displayed extraordinary courage under the most painful and trying circumstances."

Rank and organization: Sergeant, Company H, 11th Ohio Infantry. Place and date: At Missionary Ridge, Tenn., 25 November 1863. Entered service at: Troy, Ohio. Birth: ------. Date of issue: Unknown. Citation: Though severely wounded, was first of his regiment on the summit of the ridge, planted his colors inside the enemy's works, and did not leave the field until after he had been wounded 5 times.

J. Franklin Bell received the Medal of Honor on Dec. 11, 1899 for his actions during the Philippine Insurrection way back in 1899.

The following list displays the names of individuals who were balloted to receive Revolutionary War bounty land in the area known as "The Military Tract of Central New York". This chart displays only the names for bounty land areas that are NOW within the current boundaries of Tompkins County, NY. These names and related information were obtained from the book: The Balloting Book and Other Documents Relating to Military Bounty Lands, In The State Of New York-Pub. Albany: Printed By Packard & Van Benthuysen- 1825 (Source: Cayuga County Clerk's Office, Office of Records Management, 160 Genesee St, Auburn, NY 13021) Current town locations of military tract lots were obtained from a review of maps found in the book: "A Topographical Atlas of Tompkins County New York", Stone   Stewart Publishers, Philadelphia 1866. A total of 310 Lots (containing 600 acres per lot) from the area known as the Military Tract of Central NY, fall within the current boundaries of Tompkins County. From this total, 16 lots were cited as reserved for Gospel, Church or Schools. In the Township of Dryden, an additional 5 lots were NOT initially balloted due to boundary conflicts and were cited as 'Interferes With Massachusetts'. The remaining 289 bounty land lots and corresponding names are found on this list. Lots were balloted as bounty land to eligible soldiers or their heirs and assignees beginning in mid 1790.

Was the son of Oliver Bell (d. March 14, 1839 ae 87) who ran a tavern in 1812 in Constable. He d. Oct. 26, 1871 ae 79 and is buried at Constable.
Bell. Freeman   born in about   1788 in   VT and d. Mar. 28, 1861.   Married Trefina Hopkins   (b. 1796 in VT, d. Nov. 26, 1872) They had at least one daughter, Sarah. Oscar and Hanna Holister lived with them in 1860 in Constable, and she may also have been his daughter. No military information on him except that Hurd listed him as a War of 1812 soldier from Constable. He was the brother of Samuel Bell
