Subject: Bergen Arches in Jersey City:Dear Ms. Koberle:
I was extremely disappointed to read on the front page of the Jersey Journal (2/5/99) that "a long list of city, county, state and federal officials say building the roadway to connect Tonnelle Avenue with the Jersey City waterfront is crucial to moving people to and from developments that are mushrooming along the Hudson River".
CRUCIAL? What I see as CRUCIAL
· is keeping more single-occupancy cars from taking up parking space not yet provided,
· is discouraging ever more automobiles from emitting more fumes in an already overburdened environment We need to keep MORE CARS out of Jersey City. (At the same time we need to get those who CURRENTLY drive to our waterfront to get out of their cars and take the Light Rail, when completed, from a parking lot nearby.) Put a parking lot somewhere near Tonnelle Circle and run a trolley through the Bergen Arches to the waterfront. Make that trolley line and the new Light Rail CHEAP to park and ride. Make them both SAFE to ride with FREQUENT SERVICE during rush hour. Charge high parking rates in the parking lots near the waterfront (or tax them severely) to discourage their continued use. I live in the Van Vorst Park Historic District. Each morning both Montgomery Street and Columbus Drive are choked with cars - mostly single-occupancy. I understand that Grand St. is no better. We already have too much commuter automobile traffic.
Encourage mass transit.
If the study of the Bergen Arches is already biased toward a commuter highway, we're wasting our money. The study should be approved only if a mass transit route is to be considered as an equal altemative. Otherwise, abandon the study
Sincerely,
