West Shore and Secaucus Transfer

The enclosed map illustrates two reason why the proposed NJ Transit's proposed routing for restoring service on the West Shore needs to be reconsidered.

1. After traveling 8 miles from Lombardi through the Hackensack Meadows, you're only in Secaucus. If NJ Transit were to use the Weehawken Tunnel route for a Midtown Ferry Direct West Shore service, traveling 8 miles from Lombardi would get you to the United Nations on the East River in Manhattan.

2. Environmental permits will be required to build a trestle crossing the wetlands. The Fish and Wildlife agency has determined that this is vital habitat area. According to an interested environmental organization, it would take upwards of 10 years (if ever) to get the required permits.

Not illustrated by the map is the fact NJ Transit cannot guarantee that there will be enough room on peak hour trains to carry the projected numbers of West Shore commuters from Secaucus to New York. NJ Transit ridership projections have always been conservative. They grossly underestimated the Morris Line Midtown Direct ridership.
