Cycling is a great way to travel – reducing the environmental impact of travelling to work by cutting emissions, improving your health and fitness and saving you money!

To keep fit it is recommended by the British Medical Association that you need to exercise moderately for half an hour five times a week and exercise hard for twenty minutes three times a week. This goal can easily be achieved through cycling to work, an exercise that only costs the price of a bike!

By cycling to work you will reduce your impact on the environment. For example, (if you cycle from Wantage 2 days per week, 20 weeks per year you would avoid the emission of 150 kg of CO₂!

And of course, if you currently drive, you will also save money. For occasional cyclists this will reduce the cost of fuel and wear and tear on your car. But for regular cyclists, this could remove the need for you having two cars in your household. Imagine……..one lot of car tax, insurance and running costs, not to mention the capital cost of the car in the first place.

In order to cycle to work it would be quite reasonable to expect stress-free safe and easy routes. It would also be reasonable to expect that when you arrived at work there would be on-site facilities for cycle storage and showering. HarBUG intends to achieve these aims through a number of measures. These include:

• Assessing potential cycle routes from Wantage, Didcot, the North and the South, and campaigning to achieve the build and upgrade of these routes
• Safe crossings and traffic calming on the A4185. This will help bus users, including school children
• Working with UKAEA and Oxfordshire County Council’s transport and planning officers to ensure that future development takes account of cyclists’ needs
• Securing cycle access to site from the main routes and improving the surface for all-weather use
• Helping Sustrans to complete the National Cycle Network and its links to our proposed routes
• Campaigning to ensure that showers and bike sheds are available
• Encouraging people to cycle, because it’s fun!
