Homily Points

8th Sunday A

General. There seems to be plenty of disorder around in the world today, humanity having forgotten God’s doings with us and given in to the evil one’s promptings. Today’s Liturgy is a prayer to God to deliver us from the evil we have brought upon ourselves so that together with the Church we might give praise to Him in peace as becoming to both God and humanity which has been formed in His very likeness.

Isaiah. The Lord God is ever reminiscent of His human creation, knowing each and every one by his or her name. A person may believe he has been abandoned by God, but this is far from the truth. In trespass too, it is God who is allowing it all to happen to strenghten our faith in Him and so that we might return to Him, or rather turn back our hearts to Him by converting.

First Epistle to the Corinthians. St Paul inveighs against human judgment of whatever kind, stating he does not even dare judge himself. Although he does not feel anything wrong on his conscience, he does not for this reason consider himself to be justified. He leaves judgment in the hands of God Who will in good time show the true mettle of which one is made and make light shine out in the darkness. It is then that ultimate judgment will be made and praise bestowed by God on whosoever deserves it.

St Matthew. Divine Providence takes care and runs the whole of creation, humans especially. God provides according to one’s temporal and spiritual needs. It may be that wealth is dangerous for a person’s spiritual survival, hence the state of indigence one finds oneself in. The spiritual order is very different from the temporal one, hence the reason why serving God and money at the same time go against each other. Faith means utter trust in God that He will provide.
