Homily Points

18th Sunday A

General. The Eucharist is a prayer of Thanksgiving to God for all He has done with us through our lifetime and, for regular Sunday church-goers, during the past week. God is always there to bestow His mercy and goodness on whosoever requests them because in Him they see a creator and Father Who is ever ready to help and to save through His Son Jesus Christ.

Isaiah. God invites us to set our priorities right and to seek heavenly matters rather than terrestrial ones. He dispenses freely of His essence to give liberally to his creatures who were made in His own image. God asks us to heed to what He has to say to us so that we might move closer to Him in the same engulfing Love in which He created us.

Epistle to the Romans. St Paul here writes a hymn to Jesus sung by early Christians. Christ’s love manifested itself to us on the Cross, while he was suffering most and dying for us. If we were to recognize God’s love for us we too would be ready to undergo any kind of tribulation to keep our love for Christ steadfast in witness to his and the Father’s same love for humanity.

St Matthew. Jesus was a devout Jew who prayed frequently, assiduously and during the most untimely hours of the night. He did this in solitude for union with the Father requires that intimacy which only comes through silence and love. This stance made Jesus compassionate, the reason for the way he felt when feeding the multitude which had gathered to listen to him. We now understand that he had given us his body as true nourishment, namely his compassion and mercy which he expects us to show towards our neightbours.
