Homily Points

23rd Sunday A

General. Belief in Jesus is also belief in the Father and in the Spirit. Whosoever entertains this belief may be called as son of God, meriting eternal life which is bestowed on them by Baptism. It is by this grace that they can celebrate the Eucharist within the Church which is a temporary place on earth where the faithful gather together to give praise to God as His adopted children.

Ezechiel. A prophet is bound by the main duty of spreading the word and of chastising the faithful who fail to abide by the word of God. This duty does not only extend to priests in the New Testament, but also to any other Christian who, owing to the Baptism and chrism (Holy Oil) he has received, is also Prophet, Priest and Prince as Jesus was. Salvation depends on condescension into one’s own reality and the fraternal help given to other baptized persons on matters of faith.

Epistle to the Romans. St Paul extrapolates the maxim that love is the fulfilment of the Law. As the commandments forbid us to be unjust and hateful towards our neighbours, the antithesis to the infringements mention in the commandments is to love one’s neighbour like oneself. Very often we do not see that our neighbour’s character which we hate is very similar to our own character, and that in hating our neighbour’s character we would be hating ourselves. This creates a vicious circle within us which can only be healed by first loving our neighbour, then ourselves. After all any hate, or lack of love, for other persons lies within us, depending on how we see ourselves.

St Matthew. It is a Christian’s duty to warn another Christian on the life he is leading, especially where sins are involved. In the Sacrament of Reconciliation all sins are forgiven, absolute authority having been given by Jesus to priests who can hear confessions. The same way sinners can be told off as pagans if they do not attend to God’s words through His sent ones, so are we comforted that where two or three raise their voices in prayer and praise together, the Father will reward them according to His Will.
